Beyond Eden ’10: Shark Toof Installation

Beyond Eden is this weekend and from what we’ve seen, it looks to be one amazing event.  LeBasse Projects is one of the galleries participating in the 2-day fair and one of the artists they will be showing is Los Angeles’ own Shark Toof.  The hustling hometown hero, whose prolific work can be seen all around the streets of the city,  presents a large scale installation as well as a selection of pieces.  Come by this weekend and see his amazing work when the fair […]

Preview and Giveaway: “Selections from The New World” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Earlier this year, AM brought you coverage of Corey Helford Gallery’s “Art From The New World” summer exhibition at Bristol’s City Museum and Art Gallery in the UK. It was an exciting exhibition and a rare chance for UK art lovers to meet the group of artists in one place on our side of the pond. Since the doors opened, over 60,000 visitors attended the exhibit to get a taste of the art. Now it’s time for LA to have the favor returned. A selection […]

Baby Tattooville ’10 – Robert Williams Roast

Baby Tattooville 2010 featured a special tribute to Robert Williams. From helping pave the way for young artists to founding JUXTAPOZ magazine, Robert Williams has been an enormous influence on alternative art. That influence is immeasurable. Still, to get a better understanding of the artist who brought the term “low brow” into the fine arts lexicon, Baby Tattooville assembled a roast with a panel of some of the individuals closest to Mr. Williams. During the Roast, Williams was subjected to good-natured ridicule by friends Mat […]

Previews: NYCC – Myth Warrior & Sharky @ Toy Qube Booth #2874

Our friends over at Toy Qube sent us a few images of the figures that will be released at this weekend’s New York Comicon. First is the long awaited release of the hand painted Dragon Warrior from the Mythic Warriors line. Created by Keith Poon, the 10-inch resin figurine is a mix of the classic Terracotta Warrrior & the mythical legends of Asian lore. It comes housed in a custom wood box. It’s an edition of 50 and only 25 will be available at the booth. […]

Releases – New Barry McGee Book

After a storied – and seemingly hectic – year that included multiple museum and gallery exhibits (Bolinas, Oakland, Brussels, SFMOMA), the Mission School icon turned street art legend, Barry McGee, has a new book up his sleeve. In what has become a series of similarly conceived of and wonderfully insightful publications by the artist, the newest 176-page hardcover book is presented “as a visual collage, incorporating photographs, drawings, paintings and documentation from past and present installations”. Published by Alleged Press and Damiani Editore, the currently […]

Teaser: KAWS @ Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris)

After “Passing Through” Hong Kong in a giant way (covered), KAWS will be bringing his unique brand of pop art to Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin on November 6th. It was at Perrotin’s Miami location in 2008 where KAWS made some of his first major waves in the fine art world with the Pharrell “curated” exhibit, Saturated, showing the public for the first time some of his impressively rendered, large scale Smurfs and Spongebob themed works. Although he has shown work in a previous group exhibit at […]

Baby Tattooville ’10: “California Kustom” Museum Reception

As blissful and adventurous as the confines of the Mission Inn (where everything usually goes down) are, sometimes it is good to leave and take a field trip during Baby Tattooville. As has become tradition for the event, the Riverside Art Museum, in conjunction with BT, opened an exhibition featuring artists from the weekend-long extravaganza. The show—which unlike other BT events is open to the public—includes fantastic works by Robert and Suzanne Williams, Ron English, Coop, Michael Hussar, Anthony Ausgang, William Stout, Spain Rodriguez, Van […]

Openings / Streets: FAME Festival 2010

For the last two years, there’s only one place even the most half-hearted of street art fan should be in September and that’s the picturesque town of Grottaglie, in the foot of Italy, and this year is no exception as the town again provides the canvas for curator Angelo Milano’s FAME Festival. As with previous years, Angelo has invited a stylistically and geographically diverse selection of renowned and, at least for now, less recognized artists to decorate the walls of his hometown as they see […]

Openings: Brian Viveros – “The Dirtyland” @ Thinkspace Gallery

A couple weeks ago, Brian Viveros’ “The Dirtyland” exhibition opened at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. The immersive exhibition featured paintings, drawings, one-off hand-finished prints, installations, sculptural work (with the help of Gustavo Ponce), and video from the Riverside based artist all inspired by his fascination with Hispanic culture in general (bull-fighting, day of the dead, luchadores, etc) and of course, nicotine. When we visited his studio before the show, Brian was really excited to have a large space all to himself to fully […]
