Basel Week Miami ’16: Juxtapoz Clubhouse

One of the venues jam-packed with goodness during Basel Week Miami was the Juxtapoz Clubhouse, a special project in conjunction between the magazine and Mana Urban Arts Project. The immersive artist retreat and exhibition space in the Wynwood District features collaborations with different artists, galleries and creatives. Last week when AM stopped by the LA Art Show, we made sure to pay a visit to the special Littletopia section curated by Red Truck Gallery. Featuring an array of artists and art that is seldom seen at the event, this part of the fair saw a healthy and steady stream of visitors. Participants included galleries like Sloan Fine Art, Breeze Block, La Luz de Jesus, Last Rites, Roq La Rue, Spoke Art, Thinkspace, and Varnish Fine Art. Last month, AM stopped by the currently running show from Adam Wallacavage (interviewed) at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. Magic Mountain features the Philadelphia-based artist’s surreal mixed media sculptures and functional art objects as well as some pieces inspired and cast from vintage toys in his personal collection. Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. The untimely recent passing of Justin Van Hoy has had an huge impact on the artistic community he was associated with. The Los Angeles based gallerist, artist and designer sadly lost his long battle with cancer in November shortly after his book Milk and Honey: Contemporary Art in California was published.
