Auctions: Christie’s Kicks Off Auction Season

Tonight, May 4, the auction season opens to a roaring start, as Christie’s NY has its Impressionist/Modern sale and an auction from the Collection of Mrs. Sydney F. Brody. As always, the art and financial worlds will look at the auctions as a gauge of confidence in the overall art market. Signs of renewed interest have appeared and tonight’s sales could carry that momentum. Spearheading everyone’s hopes is Pablo Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves and Bust, a 1932 painting that many feel could top $100 million […]

In order to celebrate the occasion, our friends have organized a party and silent auction benefit for Free Arts NYC at Factory Fresh on April 24. Artists taking part in the auction include […]

If you have been reading AM this week, you may remember our recent review of the Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Philip de Pury auctions. More images after the jump…

Preview: Phillips de Pury Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales

AM continues its coverage of the London February Auctions (see our Christie’s preview) with a look at Phillips de Pury’s Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales (February 12 – 13 2010). Overall, there are fewer outstanding pieces available here than at Christie’s or Sotheby’s, however there are still many fantastic, iconic pieces up for grabs, including several Basquiats, a strong Banksy, an early Kaws set, and a fabulous Ai Weiwei triptych (above). Take a look after the jump…

Jeff Koons & Damien Hirst Prices Drop 50%

Two of the biggest stars of the art boom in the latter part of the last decade, Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, were bound to feel the effects of the down economy. It’s taken some time to compile the data of all the fallout but it looks like their works have taken about a 50% hit in value since those happier times. On the brighter side, sounds as though the fairly or unfairly portrayed scapegoats of the art world’s extravagance should make a recovery eventually, […]

50 Parties Art Auction @ Ryan McGinness Studios

On Friday, AM had the pleasure of attending one of Ryan McGinness‘ exclusive 50 Parties events held at his SOHO studio. Given that all the major New York auction houses had held their fall sales during the week, it was appropriate that McGinness’ party that night was itself an auction – but one in which the artists themselves were the sellers, with no auction house taking a commission. Sixteen works were on the block, including pieces by David Ellis, Jose Parla, Cheryl Dunn, Todd “REAS” […]

Gary has generously donated an awesome drawing measuring 6 feet x 3 feet for this cause. Check out the auction here, but hurry cause this ends a little after midnight tonight. See the detailed pics after the jump.
