Previews: Christie’s x Murakami “Tohoku-Pacific Earthquake Benefit” Auction

On Friday, November 9th, Christie’s will partner with Takashi Murakami and Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. to provide support for the victims of the March 11, 2011 Tohoku-Pacific earthquake in Japan by dedicating a special section of a forthcoming New York auction to the continuing relief effort. Proceeds from the sale – expected to reach $5 million – will be contributed to The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Global Giving, and International Medical Corps, providing relief to the survivors of the catastrophe. As you knew from our teaser article, we were looking forward to the Emmanuel Perrotin booth at Art Hong Kong because of what KAWS had to offer. Another artist that we were looking forward to seeing at Art HK 10 was Murakami protege, Aya Takano. The Japanese artist, whose show we also covered in NY, was exhibiting at the Emmanuel Perrotin booth and has been one of the highlights among strong sales at this year’s Hong Kong Internation Art Fair, apparently selling several of her pieces to Chinese and Korean collectors. Last Saturday night, Upper East Side’s Skarstedt Gallery hosted the opening of one of the most exciting shows so far this art season – Japanese pop-art star Aya Takano’s “Reintegrating Worlds.” The exhibition, which is Takano’s second solo with the gallery, consists of a brilliant collection of 15 new paintings filled with fantastic scenes of waifish girls and all kinds of animals. Frieze Art Fair takes place every October in Regentâ€™s Park, London and this year, over 60,000 people step through the doors to take in all the art on display. There were signs of renewed confidence in the market as there appeared to be increased buying in the under $1 million range, but higher priced works still were not moving well. Along with Aya Takano and Chiho Aoshima, Ai Yamaguchi was one of the young, up-and-coming female Japanese artists involved in Takashi Murakami’s Tokyo Girls Bravo exhibition in 1999. Unlike the other two, however, Yamaguchi severed her connection with Kaikai Kiki and went her own way. Since then, she has done quite well for herself, showing her Japanese animation-style depictions of Edo-period geishas at galleries around the world, publishing beautiful silkscreen prints and collaborating with the Japanese cosmetics brand Shu Uemura.
