POW! WOW! ’15 / Openings: Thinkspace – “Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum Of Art School

Last night, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked things off with a group show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum Of Art School (111 Victoria Street). Entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement, the exhibition featured an impressive and diverse roster or artists, each contributing a 12 x 12″ piece. Continuing their involvement with POW! WOW! Hawaii, Thinkspace will be curating a second edition (see 2014) of their Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition for this year’s event. Artists were asked to contribute a 12 x 12″ piece for the show opening on February 7th at the Honolulu Museum Of Art School (111 Victoria Street). Brendan Monroe Paints Facebook Offices

Like Aakash Nihalani (interviewed) did in 2011 (covered) and how David Choe (featured) famously did (and was rewarded handsomely) in the early days, Brendan Monroe (interviewed) was recently invited in to paint part of the Facebook HQ compound. Working on a large wall, the Bay Area-based artist created a topographical mural with the his signature organic and biological infused imagery. Update: Brendan Monroe – “Blobography” @ Heath Ceramics (Los Angeles)

Tomorrow night (November 1st) in Los Angeles, Brendan Monroe (interviewed) will be be ready to reveal all the hard work he has put in at Heath Ceramics. Blobography will feature some of the amazing organic sculptural forms he created in their workshop as well as some original paintings and drawings. Previews: Brendan Monroe – “Blobography” @ Heath Ceramics (Los Angeles)

In another collaboration (see McFetridge here)  that makes sense for both parties, Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles will be presenting a show from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) early next month. Blobography will feature organic sculptural forms from the Bay Area-based artist, which have always been an extension of his science-influenced imagery. Streets: Brendan Monroe x Souther Salazar @ FFTT (Portland)

Last week, Brendan Monroe (interviewed) and Souther Salazar were able to complete their joint mural in Portland for Forest For The Trees (FFTT). The artists were invited to join the not-for-profit the public mural project, which also featured eighteen other local and international artists. Over the course of several days, Salazar painted clusters of his whimsical imagery against Monroe’s Tron-like structured background that hints at trees. Recap: POW! WOW! Taiwan

Last week, the first POW! WOW! Taiwan wrapped up successfully as invited artists finished public works throughout the capital city of Taipei. With the main event based in Hawaii (see 2014), it looks like the crew behind this annual art retreat will be branching out to different parts of the world. Showing: Brendan Monroe & Evah Fan – “Black and Night” @ Shimokitazawa Books

While in Taiwan for POW! WOW! Taiwan, husband and wife Brendan Monroe and Evah Fan took the opportunity to show together at Shimokitazawa Books. Entitled Black and Night, the exhibition featured a small selection of Monroe’s topographic “Black” ink drawings and Fan’s characters floating among the stars of the “Night” sky. POW! WOW! ’14 / Streets: Brendan Monroe x Glenn Barr

Aside from lots of amazing murals and a huge list of side events, workshops, shows, parties, etc, POW! WOW! Hawaii is an opportunity for some unusual collaborations between participating artists. One of these is this intriguing mural created by Glenn Barr and Brendan Monroe.
