Openings: Barry McGee @ Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London

AM has been keeping a watchful eye on Continental European shows featuring works by Barry McGee. Whenever the cashflow gods have been on our side, we’ve booked the necessary flights or trains to attend as well. This was the case with the 2010 joint show with Danish artist HuskMitNavn at A.L.I.C.E. Gallery in Brussels, and the 2009 three-man show (which also included Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon) curated by Aaron Rose at Berlin’s Circleculture Gallery. However, the last time McGee exhibited in the UK was […]

Releases / Signings: Clare Rojas – “Everything Flowers” @ Park Life

Bay Area-based Clare Rojas will be signing her new book, Everything Flowers, at Park Life next Friday (May 6th).  The hardcover, coming in at 96 pages, features much of her folk art-inspired paintings and is a must have for fans of the Mission School artist. On a related note, if you haven’t had a chance to look at her fantastic show at the PRISM in Los Angeles, take a look here. Discuss Clare Rojas here.

Openings: Clare Rojas – “Inside Bleak” @ PRISM Gallery

Last night, AM attended the jam-packed opening of Clare Rojas’ solo exhibition at the PRISM gallery with what appeared to be the rest of young Hollywood. The San Francisco-based painter and musician impressed with her folk-inspired murals, paintings, wall panels, and the sheer breadth of her work. Filling the expansive architectural space is no small feat, but Rojas did it by further exploring the abstraction she recently started as well as increasing the detail in her figurative work. More opening pics after the jump…

Teaser: Clare Rojas – “Inside Bleak” @ PRISM Gallery

It was during the opening of the wonderfully curated Come As You Are group show (covered) at the PRISM Gallery that we first saw these abstract works from Clare Rojas.  There’s no telling if she will continue to explore this new direction, but she will be returning to the three story architectural space on the western end of the Sunset Strip this Saturday night, February 26th with a new body of work entitled Inside Bleak as well as a performance under her stage name Peggy […]

Streets: Basel Week Miami ’10 Overview (Part III)

Here is a third and final look at the street art from Art Basel Week Miami (see part I and Part II, and Wynwood Walls) as we wind down our coverage the art highlight event of the year. We will definitely be back again next year as each successive fair seems to get bigger and better. Other than an upcoming feature on the graffiti and perhaps one or two individual focuses, this will be your final fix on the outdoor work. More photos after the […]

Openings: “Come As You Are” @ PRISM

Last night, the PRISM gallery on the Sunset Strip hosted a group exhibition “Come As You Are” in conjunction with New Image Art and RVCA. Featuring an eclectic collection of artists across all genres, the show included Susanne Melanie Berry, Kelsey Brookes (featured), Richard Colman (interviewed), Dennis Hopper, Ryan McGinness, Cleon Peterson, Clare Rojas, Craig Stecyk, Deanna Templeton, Ed Templeton and a video by Cheryl Dunn of Dash Snow as well as the three artists below. In particular, we liked the pieces by Os Gemeos […]

Basel Week Switzerland ’10: Volta6

The last fair we attended while in Switzerland was Volta6, and although it was way across town from Art Basel (covered, part 1 and 2) and Scope (covered), in a somewhat industrial part of the city, we were glad we made the trek. Unlike VoltaNY (covered), Volta6 was not focused on single-artist booths, so the smaller fair offered visitors a large range of interesting emerging artists.

Openings: Barry McGee & Clare Rojas @ Bolinas Museum

This past Saturday marked the opening of Barry McGee and Clare Rojas’ exhibition “Leave It Alone” & “Together At Last” (respectively) at the Bolinas Museum. The quaint community in northern California landed a double-stack of works featuring both iconic artists. We last saw the dynamic duo showing together last spring at New Image Art and this time the latest exhibition was indeed museum-worthy. McGee created floor to ceiling installations showcasing everything from his trademark bottles to his diverse pattern paintings to surprising goodness such as […]
