Showing: Jan Kalab – “Tension” @ BC Gallery

As we previously reported, BC Gallery in Berlin is currently hosting a solo by Jan Kalab (interviewed) which features a new series of round canvases and a large sculptural piece. Here is the followup with photos from the exhibition entitled Tension, which will stay on view until the 23rd of January. With a title referencing the structure of the works presented, the show includes works from the Czech artist’s most successful series. These minimalist pieces that experiment with the border line between geometrically perfect and organically unpredictable have been getting […]

Basel Week Miami ’15: Art Basel (Part 2)

Contrary to popular belief, Basel Week Miami isn’t just about walking around buying art from your favorite gallery or dealer. It is also a time for the general public to find inspiration from the vast assortment of quality art being displayed. Every year, the main Art Basel Miami Beach fair does a great job of serving as a “pop-up” museum for the week as over 70,000 people walk through the fair to catch legends of the past and legends in the making for the art world. It doesn’t matter […]

Basel Week Miami ’15: Art Basel (Part 1)

During the start of Basel Week Miami, we gave you an early first look during the VIP session of the Art Basel Miami Beach fair. The first day (as in years past) was the proverbial “running of the bulls” for many of the world’s elite collectors as they stormed the ginormous floor of the Miami convention center in search of artwork to add to their collections. Blue-chip galleries displayed 2015’s treasures by artists such as Andy Warhol, Kaws, Alex Israel, Tal R, Alex Katz, Josh Smith, Yoshitomo Nara, Ai […]

Openings: “Charismatic Megafauna” @ Roq La Rue

Charismatic Megafauna opened at Roq La Rue earlier this month to a packed house. Celebrating the vast diversity of the animal kingdom, the exhibition features a wide variety of creatures, some recognizable, while others are not from this world. That diversity extends itself to the artists included in the show with a plethora of styles and mediums on display, from traditional paintings, life sized creations, and even a mesmerizing illuminated wall-hung sculpture. Charismatic Megafauna will be on display until January 30th with work from Adam […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Recap: NADA

During Basel Week Miami, the second must-visit fair right behind Art Basel Miami Beach every year is NADA Miami Beach. Focusing on younger galleries and artists, NADA typically contains more fresh to market works, surprising finds, and new discoveries. Located for the first time this year at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel, it includes exhibitors from 32 cities in 15 different countries, and 21 first-time participants. Next year’s edition of the fair will be even bigger, as it expands to another section of the hotel. […]

Basel Week Miami ’15: Art Basel Miami Beach // Nova Sector

The Art Basel fair is known for presenting the best of the best in established blue chip international art. It is also a place where collectors, curators, and enthusiasts can also discover new artists as well. The Nova sector of the fair is designed for galleries to present one, two or three artists showing works created within the last three years. It features strong associations and fresh, never-before-seen pieces from the artist’s studio to each gallery’s booths. Galleries and artists exhibiting in this sector include Michael Jon […]

Basel Week Miami ’15: Art Basel Miami Beach // Positions Sector

One of the biggest criticisms of art fairs leveled by art lovers is that it is not the proper venue for properly conceived and realized artist exhibitions. Fair booths typically contain a collection of discrete works that are made to be sold and consumed. Art Basel Miami Beach’s Positions sector is the response to this criticism. The galleries that show in this part of the fair are given a platform for a single artist to present one major project. This includes installations or exhibitions that include multiple works […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Recap: KITH Homage

Another event that caught our attention during Basel Week Miami was KITH Homage, a group exhibition curated by Joshua Liner Gallery. To celebrate each of Ronnie Fieg’s previously (and soon to be) released Gel-Lyte III designs with Asics, 14 artists were asked to reinterpreted the founder of Kith NYC’s inspirations to create a piece for each of his past designs and for one future model. Participants in the pop-up show included Wayne White, Josh Sperling, Alfred Steiner, Greg Lamarche, Michael Kagan, Erin M. Riley, Evan Hecox, Riusuke Fukahori, Paul Wackers, Jim […]
