Upcoming: “Shared Space : KAWS, Karl Wirsun, Tomoo Gokita” @ Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane

Coming up on September 9th, the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane will be hosting Shared Space : KAWS, Karl Wirsun, Tomoo Gokita. The artists involved are obvious from the title, but the interesting arrangement will see 17 works from KAWS on display, but also seen will be pieces from his personal collection – 26 works by Karl Wirsum including drawings, paintings, and sculptures from 1968 to 2011, as well as 9 faceless portraits and one sculpture by Tomoo Gokita. Openings: “Shapeshifters & Sharpshooters” @ 886 Geary Gallery

Showing through today, Shapeshifters & Sharpshooters (curated by Sven Davis) at the 886 Geary Gallery features work from an international cast of artists. Coming from a diverse background from traditional art school teaching practices to graffiti writing, the participants all take abstract art-making in their own unique direction. Upcoming: Jose Parla – “Segmented Realities” @ The Standard, High Line

Starting on this Thursday, the Standard Hotel on The High Line will be be hosting new work from Jose Parla. Segmented Realities will be the Brooklyn-based artist’s first outdoor installation in New York and will consist of three two sided sculptural paintings that mirror the crumbling, graffiti covered walls that he sees and often documents on his travels. Previews: Dave Kinsey – “The Modern Condition” @ FFDG

Continuing his exploration of a new series first seen in Cologne & Detroit for a show in San Francisco, Dave Kinsey (featured) has prepared a new body of work entitled The Modern Condition. Comprising of nine works on canvas created with collage and acrylic paints, the new pieces from the Los Angeles-based artist features semi-abstracted figures surrounded with textures and colors from the natural world. Drop by FFDG on August 14th for the opening reception if you are in the area, you won’t be disappointed. Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s Food Face Portraits As Sculptures By Philip Haas

Currently (thru October 18th) at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Philip Haas has installed his larger than life sculptures that take Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s famous face portraits (made from fruits, vegetables, flowers) into the third dimension. Taking inspiration from the Renaissance painter’s The Four Seasons set of paintings, Haas has impressively recreated the characters in 360 degrees and at fifteen feet high and placed them on the south lawn of the museum. Showing: Snarkitecture / Daniel Arsham – “The Beach” @ National Building Museum

For those who have a chance to visit Washington DC through September 7th, make sure you stop by the National Building Museum to check out an immersive installation from Snarkitecture. Cofounders Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham have imagined up a beach with an ocean of 750,000 recyclable plastic balls. The monochromatic and minimalistic installation certainly mirrors the aesthetic seen in many of their previous projects and is certainly something visitors of all ages will enjoy. Previews: “Step and Repeat” @ The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA

Step and Repeat, MOCA’s annual celebration of performance art, comedy, poetry, live music, and other pleasant surprises, returns this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The weekend-long celebration will take place at The Geffen Contemporary and will feature never been seen performances by Geo Wyeth, James Fauntleroy, Cali Thornhill Dewitt, and Juliana Huxtable, and other artists. Come and see other ways of experiencing art besides viewing paintings on the wall or objects on the floor.

It’s summertime and anticipation is growing for the next Hennessy VS cognac bottle with this year being the 250th anniversary for the world’s largest and most storied cognac maker. For this occasion, Ryan McGinness (featured) was selected to chair the design of their iconic VS silhouette.
