Coming up on September 10th, Joshua Liner Gallery will be unveiling ten works on canvas and numerous smaller works on paper from Geoff McFetridge. It Looks Like It Says will be the Los Angeles-based artist’s first solo with the New York showspace and continues his signature aesthetic of simplifying forms, utilizing matte colors, and playing with perspective. Heading back for another show after a year (see 2014), Kevin Cyr (interviewed) will be will be opening Live Work Play at Alden Gallery in Provincetown tomorrow night, August 21st. The new pieces continues his series of documenting neglected vehicles and then returning to his Portland, Maine studio to paint them in detail. After installing a whimsical new installation in Washington DC with his Snarkitechture firm, Daniel Arsham has turned his attention to a more solo pursuit. Fictional Archeology sees the New York-based artist bring his signature technique of creating everyday objects as how they would appear if found by archeologists in the future to the Hong Kong branch of Galerie Perrotin on September 11th. Coming up on October 31st, Takashi Murakami will be unveiling his first solo exhibition in Japan in over 14 years. The title The 500 Arhats at the Mori Art Museum references the piece that will be the showstopper, a 100-meter-long painting which was created as a thank you to the nation of Qatar, one of the first to offer assistance after the earthquake and tsunami in 2011 in Japan. Along with this massive piece, the Japanese originator of the Superflat movement will be preparing other paintings and sculptural works. […]

James Jean x Momofuku Commission

After painting a mural last month for POW! WOW! Long Beach (covered), James Jean (interviewed) has started work on a new project. Utilizing large panels, the gifted painter looks to be prepping a large installation for friend and chef David Chang’s Momofuku restaurant group. The name can be loosely translated to “lucky peach” which explains why Jean used the peach as his focus for the commissioned works. Cai Guo-Qiang – “Sky Ladder” (China)

Explosive Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang recently successfully unleashed his Sky Ladder over Huiyu Island in Quanzhou to celebrate his grandmother’s 100th birthday. This fourth and final attempt is a culmination of 21 years of hard work to realize a vision he had when he was a child. Assisted by a helium balloon and ladder covered with pyrotechnics, the stunning display rose 500 meters into the air and lasted two and a half minutes.
