Upcoming: “Takashi Murakami’s Superflat Collection” @ Yokohama Museum of Art

Just like his friend KAWS, fellow artist Takashi Murakami will be putting part of his collection on display – scheduled for early next year at the Yokohama Museum of Art in Japan. His eclectic taste in art will be evident to visitors as works from from Shohaku and Rosanjin to Anselm Kiefer will be shown. This Thursday night, September 3rd, is the opening reception for LAX / LHR, a continuing series of shows (also see Hong Kong, SF, Berlin, Detroit) curated by Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Psychedelic Space is the soon to be released book from Kelsey Brookes from Gingko Press that explores his last three years of work. The 216 page hardcover documents his more recent paintings, spanning four solo shows, the explosive patterns that are his artistic vision of molecular structures of the psychedelic nature. The monograph has some interesting additions like “gatefold spreads, a sticker sheet, and a clear molecular overlay on his stunning “LSD” piece, along with a booklet bound within and glow-in-the-dark cover text.” To mark this […]

On 1the 4th of August, Lazarides Rathbone gallery officially opened a major solo exhibition by Lucas Price aka Cyclops entitled Dumb Poetry. Last week, AM had the opportunity to visit Heath Ceramics in San Francisco where Brendan Monroe (interviewed) was hard at work in the upstairs workshop on an upcoming show. Opening September 25th in the ceramics studio and store’s Bay Area Boiler Room, Morphology will reveal months of work the Oakland-based artist has put in testing his limits with larger pieces, carefully choosing glazes, and bringing to life (in three dimensions) concepts and elements of his visual language. Continuing to collaborate artists that speak to a new generation of viewers (see KAWS & Dabs Myla), MTV has tapped the visual language of Jen Stark for 2015’s VMA. Working with host Miley Cyrus on this year’s award show, the Los Angeles-based artist looks to be integrating her recognizable psychedelic & colorful imagery in animations, video spots (example below), ads, and artwork for the stage, among other things. Upcoming: Mars-1 Sculptures @ Burning Man

Taking his bronze sculptures to the next level, Mars-1 (featured) has prepped three massive new pieces for this year’s Burning Man. The eclectic week-long annual event in Northern Arizona has seen the San Francisco-based artist’s organic imagery before (see 2010), but nothing in three dimensions.
