Basel Week Miami ’14: Aqua

Another fair we visited while in Miami was the tenth edition of Aqua. Featuring emerging and mid-career artists, the unique setting was a classic South Beach hotel that opened its rooms to collectors and exhibitors for the duration of Basel Week Miami. One of the pleasant surprises we stumbled upon was the piece seen above from Travis Louie (interviewed) that sees him using color for the first time in his signature series of works (exhibited by William Baczek). See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss […]

Openings: Kai & Sunny – “Lots of Bits of Star” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

British artistic duo Kai and Sunny, who we have been long time followers, recently opened a new solo exhibition in New York at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Lots of Bits of Stars includes carvings, letterpress prints and ink works on paper. The duo also created an original collaboration with Shepard Fairey. Depicting geometric patterns of flora and fauna, the works in the show revolve around contradicting perceptions of the natural world, balancing the serene with the fierce, the fragile with the stable, and the vulnerable with the assertive. The creative […]

Showing: Quam Odunsi – “Distinction Without a Difference” @ Design Matters Gallery

Open right now until Dec 19 in Los Angeles is Quam Odunsi’s third solo show with Design Matters Gallery. Exploring the logical fallacy of distinction without a difference, the artist utilizes original content taken on film cameras (35mm, 120mm, Polaroid) which is silkscreened onto canvas and paper; sculpture, which includes collaged Polaroid prints; and a eye-popping original short film shot on Super8, which is shown in the back room space of the gallery. A limited edition (of 18) print of the tricycle image has also […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: NADA

In Miami, the second must-visit fair right behind the Art Basel Miami Beach fair every year is NADA Miami Beach. Focusing on younger galleries and artists, NADA typically contains more surprising finds and new discoveries. Located in the historic Deauville Beach Resort, it included 36 exhibitors this year. Works ranged from art stars such as Israel Lund, Mary Weatherford, and Jon Rafman, to newer ones, such as Darja Bajagić, Mike Bouchet, and Peter Sutherland. Pictured above: solo presentation by Brian Kokoska at East Hampton Shed’s […]

Releases: Jim Houser – “Fusillade” Print

Philadelphia-based artist Jim Houser recently released a new print through Contemporanea in Spain entitled Fusillade. The name of the five color screen print is certainly appropriate as it features a cloud of arrows (some hand painted) that is often seen in Houser’s pieces as well as his installations. Measuring 16 x 16″ with a 1″ border, it comes in an edition of 50 (10 APs) and available here for those interested. Discuss Jim Houser here.

Showing: Kaws – “Permanent Vacation” @ Eden Rock Gallery

While the eyes of the art loving community worldwide were recently anchored to the events at Basel Week Miami, Brian Donnely aka KAWS picked an even more tropical surrounding for his latest exhibition. In collaboration with Galerie Perrotin and Art Saint Barth, the Brooklyn-based artist opened Permanent Vacation on November 26th, at Eden Rock Gallery at Eden Rock – St Barths hotel in the Caribbean. Presenting six new paintings, the show includes five black and white works from his Man’s Best Friend series of Charles […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Pulse

While in town for Basel Week Miami, we made sure to head north a little ways to attend the Pulse held at their new location – Indian Beach Park. The tenth edition of the  event featured some familiar names as well as many artists new to us. One of these was the sculptural works of Jorge Mayet (seen above) at the Galeria Horrach Moya booth. Enjoy more photos below form the fair… See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here.

Showing: 2501 / Francesco Igory Deiana – “Involving Doubts” @ D406

Gallery D406 in Modena, Italy, opened a two man show by 2501 and Francesco Igory Deiana on November 22nd titled Involving Doubts. While sharing similar ideas, concepts and even elements of their visual languages, their abstract works are significantly different. It’s these similarities however that make their pieces work so well together, and it’s these crucial differences that make their styles complement each other. Both artist mostly work with black paint, have a strong focus on the line work and use just one other bright color […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Showing: Daniel Arsham – “Welcome to the Future” @ Locust Projects

Taking one of his most recognizable series of works to the next level, Daniel Arsham has created a site specific installation at Locust Projects coinciding with Basel Week Miami. Entitled Welcome to the Future, the excavation site created by the New York-based artist in the gallery’s floor holds thousands of what he calls “future relics,” objects of today’s time but made to look like calcified artifacts through his special technique. The fact that many of these are already obsolete (such as VHS rates, Walkmans, old school […]
