Showing: “Abstract” @ BC Gallery

Berlin’s BC Gallery is opening a new season with an interesting group exhibition simply titled Abstract that opened September 26th. Featuring works by nine international artists, this show puts a focus on non-figurative artworks along with its possibilities and advantages. Experimenting with geometrical forms, materials, mediums and colors, often juxtaposing black and white, featured artists show their take on abstraction. While some artists such as Moneyless or Nelio use strict geometrical shapes, others break these patterns into new, unfamiliar ones. The creation and use of such unusual shapes […]

Continuing his long relationship with the Culver City gallery, Kehinde Wiley is currently showing at Roberts & Tilton, his fifth solo there. Entitled The World Stage: Haiti, the new work follows the same successful formula from previous exhibitions while sourcing from a new locale. Carrying on his series of paintings of disadvantaged youth from different international locales (Jamaica, Israel, France, India, Brazil, Lagos, Dakar, China, and Sri Lanka) posed as if in classical paintings, the new work draw attention to the people of Haiti and its history. Created with Wiley’s signature aesthetic, ideas […]

Openings: Tessar Lo – “Devices And The Virtues” @ Jaski Art Gallery

On the 27th of September, Jaski Gallery in Amsterdam introduced a new solo from Tessar Lo to their collectors and local art lovers. Devices And The Virtues is Lo’s third show with the gallery and it once again proved the strong connection and love between the artist and the city. For this show, the Toronto-based artist prepared several large canvases, some mid size ones, and a nice selection of drawings on paper that were displayed in an eye-catching cluster. Exploring and playing with his expressive, naive style, purposely minimizing his efforts, the […]

Studio Visits: Carl Krull – “Seismic” @ V1 Gallery

Ahead of Carl Krull’s current show at V1 Gallery, which opened over the weekend, we paid a visit to his studio to take a look at the new work. Situated at the top of an ancient building in Copenhagen overlooking the harbor, the impressive work space is a perfect setting to get the creative juices going and has indeed housed other artists throughout its history. Seismic is an appropriate title for Krull’s new work as he uses a very distinctive technique to produce his images […]

Earlier this month, the OHWOW Gallery opened a new solo show from Torey Thornton, his debut showing in Los Angeles. Entitled Some Narrow Sleeping, the new exhibition presents mixed media works that play with manipulations of scale and perspective, somewhat of a continuation of the body of work seen in France recently (covered). Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Torey Thornton here.

Previews: Ai Weiwei – “@Large” on Alcatraz

Starting September 27th thru April of next year, a major exhibition from Ai Weiwei will be on view at Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. The legendary prison and tourist hotspot is an intriguing location for the Chinese aritst’s creative endeavor as well as his message about human rights and freedom of expression, bringing his work in tension with ideas of confinement and restriction intrinsic to the locale. Seven site specific installations – With Wind (seen above), Trace, Refraction, Stay Tuned, Illumination, Blossom, Yours Truly will be […]

Fashion: Sterling Ruby x Raf Simons x Kate Moss

Kate Moss, who has been a muse for many an artist, was recently decked out in new Sterling Ruby painted parkas and photographed for AnOther Magazine. The paint-splattered limited edition garments, which would apparently cost you about the price of a car, are part of Dior creative director Raf Simons’ Fall/Winter 2014 collection. You can see the rest of the collaborative effort between Ruby and Simons here. Photo credit: Willy Vanderperre / AnOther Magazine (via Supertouch). Discuss Sterling Ruby here.

Videos: Conor Harrington & Andrew Telling – “Eat And Delete” Trailer

After an in studio look and associated print release, we now have more glimpses of the new imagery Conor Harrington (interviewed) has been working on for his upcoming New York solo. The peek comes courtesy of a new trailer for a documentary put together by long time collaborator Andrew Telling which recreates the narrative running through Eat And Delete as it gives a behind the scenes look at the elaborate photoshoots the UK-based artist uses for his reference.
