AM recently had the pleasure of visiting the Brooklyn studio of painter Michael Kagan as he prepares for his upcoming exhibition at Joshua Liner Gallery which opens April 3rd. Entitled Thunder in the Distance, this latest body of work continues his exploration of space aviation. Known for painting with oils, Kagan employs an impasto technique which utilizes thick and deliberate strokes. Over the weekend, the Known Gallery in Los Angeles hosted the opening for an exhibition from Dennis Morris, a UK-based photographer especially known for his work in the music industry. This particular showing focuses on his iconic shots of Bob Marley, a seminal period of time in his young career when he toured with the Jamaican singer-songwriter. Opening as we speak, the Marais location of Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is hosting the reception for Tom Sachs’ new show. The title of the new works, American Handmade Paintings, speaks to the NY-based sculptor’s use of American iconography as well as the way his pieces are meticulously constructed. KAWS aka Brian Donnelly just opened his big European museum exhibition, curated by Fernando Francés, at CAC Malaga. Friday and Saturday night (March 28th & 29th), the LANDMARK in Los Angeles will be hosting the opening of Finding Vivian Maier. The documentary detailing the intriguing story of the discovery of the gifted photographer’s talent and work only after her death may be of interest to those who attended shows of her photos in 2013 & 2012 at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. German artist Stohead is currently having a solo show at Galerie Lefeuvre in Paris, showing for the second time in their space. Titled Now, the show features 14 colorful, large size canvases in which he mixes his signature tagging and calligraphy elements with abstract smoke elements. One Grand Gallery in Portland is currently exhibiting Adam Friedman’s latest body of work Esoterica. The PDX-based artist has compiled a series of paintings and sculptural elements housed within the muraled space reflecting his recognisable yet inexplicable geological landscape based subject matter.
