Studio Visits: Swoon – VNA “NYC Takeover 2.0” @ Supra NYC

During January, our friends at Very Near Almost (VNA) invited us to come along on a visit to Swoon (interviewed) Brooklyn studio while they conducted an intimate photo shoot for their 25th issue. Swoon and her crew graciously opened up their sun-drenched Red Hook space and allowed us to watch them work on some upcoming projects. Typically, Swoon’s creative process involves a multitude of techniques, from hand cut lino blocks to drawings, delicate hand cut patterns to intricately sown finishings. There isn’t a detail that isn’t […]

Armory Week ’14: Volta

One of the satellite fairs we visited first during New York’s Armory Week is Volta. This unique event does not showcase a sampling of a diverse roster of artists like most booths, but instead the invited gallerists select one artist to focus on. This results in a memorable way to keep the viewer’s attention as they run through the aisles focusing on one gallery and discovering a single artist at a time. Photo credit: AK for Arrested Motion.

Showing: Kid Zoom “Landed” @ Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art

Ian Strage aka Kid Zoom recently introduced his latest installation, Landed, for the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. With its focus on architecture, this large, site-specific sculptural work follows his solo exhibitions last year at the National Gallery of Victoria (covered), and at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch (covered). For this piece, the Australian artist recreated his childhood home, a typical 1920’s suburban house that appears like it’s been dropped on the forecourt of the Art Gallery of South Australia. With it’s large size and odd positioning, taking […]

Showing: Yoshitomo Nara @ Blum & Poe

Over the weekend, AM stopped by Blum & Poe in Culver City to check out the new expansive exhibition from Yoshitomo Nara. The solo is the Japanese artist’s seventh with the gallery and includes a selection of new paintings, a series of large-scale bronze sculptures, and a survey in the upstairs space of drawings made over the last thirty years displayed in a chronological order. Definitely make plans to stop by if you are in the area before the close date of April 12th. Discuss this show here. Discuss Yoshitomo […]

Currently until Tuesday, March 11th, Tiny Showcase will have two prints available for purchase individually or as a set from Josh Keyes (interviewed). Although the originals were painted for different shows, the two pieces seemed destined to end up together due to their synchronous imagery. You can now add both for your collection for $60 or separately for $35 each with $10 from each sale donated to the Ocean Conservancy. Discuss Josh Keyes here.

Upcoming: Geoff McFetridge @ V1 Gallery

On March 21st, Geoff McFetridge will be opening a new solo at V1 Gallery, his second with the Copenhagen showspace after a successful stint there in 2011 (covered). Because the Los Angeles -based artist is a man with many talents, we as art fans are glad to see him back in the studio, resulting in some pretty sweet paintings like the one seen above that will be part of the show. He only recently completed work on the Oscar-nominated film Her, where he designed the interfaces for […]

After attending this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii and completing a large collaborative mural for the event, Andrew Schoultz headed to Austin, Texas for his next project. Juxtapoz & Converse have teamed up to bring the Los Angeles-based artist to SXSW where he painted another big wall, this time with a sweet tank embellishment. Previews: Pryce Lee – “Single Shot” @ Anonymous Gallery (Pop Up)

Tomorrow night, Anonymous Gallery in New York will present the first solo exhibition of artist Pryce Lee. Entitled Single Shot, this show consists of transformative works that focus on life, death and the human experience. The 15 “single shots” on display will provide the opportunity for attendees to be both viewer and viewed simultaneously, forcing objectivity and contemplation while becoming a part of the artist’s subject matter. Depicted through specific acts of gun violence, this work further explores how singular moments, for better or worse, alter an […]
