Studio Visits/Previews: Eric White – “All Of This Has Not Occurred” @ Martha Otero Gallery

AM recently had the pleasure of stopping by New York-based artist Eric White’s (interviewed) studio.  During the visit, we got the chance to see some of his new work for his solo exhibition entitled All of This Has Not Occurred coming up at Martha Otero Gallery in Los Angeles. White showed us an alternate reality with his work – work which he describes as “Paranoid Social Realism” – a look into a different Hollywood, which is conceived as a multidimensional world. He executes this by masterfully inventing films and […]

Studio Visit / Previews: Mary Iverson – “Sunk” @ Davidson Galleries

We recently visited Mary Iverson’s studio as she finished up works for her Sunk exhibition, opening on November 7th at the Davidson Galleries in Seattle. After receiving an art grant, Mary traveled to Yosemite National Park in order to gain some source material for her wonderful landscape paintings. In addition to the photographs she takes for reference, she also takes the opportunity to paint at location with water colors. These smaller pieces are most dear to her heart since they were created while surrounded by […]

Previews: Mat Collishaw – “The Last Meal on Death Row” @ Stephen Webster

On Thursday, Nov. 7, Stephen Webster (in its No Regrets lounge) in Beverly Hills, CA will open a show of works by Mat Collishaw featuring his Last Meal on Death Row works. This series features meticulously-arranged staged photography still lifes based on death row inmates’ last meals before they are executed. The eerie subject of the images conflict with the style in which they are depicted: 17th century Vanitas paintings –  a manner traditionally used to explore the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, […]

Showing: Jeff Depner – ‘Variations: Black Napkins’ @ Nancy Margolis Gallery

Vancouver-based artist Jeff Depner opened his debut New York solo exhibition last week at Nancy Margolis Gallery. Variations: Black Napkins showcases Depner’s intense application process where he places multiple layers of paint amidst an equal amount of reductive processes to build up his compositions. His hard edged forms have an organic feel amongst the highly stylized architectural notions he presents. Geometric configurations wrestle with natural elements in his paintings, where colour theory underpins his architectonic aesthetic. The work itself is presented with a variety of paint types on canvas, using the […]
