Showing: “Takashi Murakami In Wonderland” @ Perrotin Gallery (Shanghai)

Last week, Takashi Murakami In Wonderland opened at Perrotin Gallery’s Shanghai location, the Japanese artist’s first solo in China. For his largest gallery show to date in Asia, the Superflat movement founder has chosen to focus on the evolution of his signature “Mr. DOB” character who he states is used as a self-portrait after 20 years of history together. Ranging from single-panel canvases to a large 15-meter-long acrylic painting mounted on an aluminum frame, as well as a monumental 250 cm sculpture, the body of work […]

Previews: Eric Yahnker – “Factory Reset” @ The Hole

For his third showing with The Hole in New York opening tomorrow (November 15th), Eric Yahnker will once again present a series of works that are at times darkly humorous, at times unsettling, and oftentimes both. Factory Reset marks the first time we have seen him use sandpaper as his “canvas,” creating pastel pieces that are critique on America today. Covering political issues, pop culture, and current events with expert wit and in combinations that are wholly unexpected, the artist based in Desert Hot Springs, California has once again assembled a […]

Showing: Emily Mae Smith & Genesis Belanger – “A Strange Relative” @ Perrotin Gallery (New York)

A couple weekends ago, the New York branch of Perrotin Gallery opened a joint exhibition from Emily Mae Smith & Genesis Belanger. A Strange Relative features an intriguing pairing of paintings by Smith and sculptures by Belanger, an amazingly cohesive showing that can be taken as a conversation between the two Brooklyn-based artists. Much attention to detail can be seen in this surreal collaboration, especially in the placement of objects that mirror the imagery in the canvases – an example (seen below) of which is Smith’s take […]

Previews: Tauba Auerbach – “A Broken Stream” @ Paula Cooper Gallery

Tonight at Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, Tauba Auerbach will be returning to open a show entitled Broken Stream featuring video, sculpture, drawing and painting. Despite the diverse range of techniques and mark-making, the New York-based artist’s work is always rooted in the way mathematics and physics, and science intersect with art. Anchoring the new exhibition are two beautiful installations centering on her work with glass, one with rods mirroring the helices and waves seen in nature and one seen through freestanding lenses flanking either side. Rounding out the […]

First Look: KAWS – “GONE” @ Skarstedt Gallery

With the public opening of the heavily anticipated exhibition from KAWS set for tomorrow in NYC, here is a first look at what will be on display at Skarstedt Gallery. GONE features new abstracted paintings that at this point only subtly references the XX and iconic cartoonish characters that used to figure so prominently in the Brookyn-based artist’s work. These vibrantly colored compositions are paired nicely with four new large-scale bronze sculptures ranging from the familiar repositioned (like his head down Chum or smaller Companion sitting on a pedestal) […]
