With a hugely popular retrospective that just closed at the Berkeley Art Museum, Barry McGee exhibited two new pieces with his new New York gallery Cheim and Read in its booth at Art Basel Miami Beach. A gigantic skull painting by Donald Baechler was another highlight, as it stared blankly at fair-goers. Openings: ESPO’s Creative Outlet

Last weekend, Steve Powers held an opening event for ESPO’s Creative Outlet, his new store located in downtown Brooklyn. The shop features a wide selection of Powers’ artwork and ephemera, from books and catalogs to prints and paintings on metal. In addition, for the opening, Powers went way back into his archive to offer ESPO brand products from the Street Market era. Without a doubt the sun of the art fair solar system that is Basel Week Miami is Art Basel. Concentrating on just this fair and dedicating our energy to catching it in its entirety including the two hundred plus blue chip galleries present took AM two full days (see day one). AM found time to visit another fair in Midtown Miami, the inaugural Miami Project earlier this week. Unlike most new fairs, we were impressed by their solid lineup of respected galleries and great facilities. This is perhaps this is due to the experience of the fair’s organizers, artMRKT Productions, who have already held fairs Houston, San Francisco, and the Hamptons. New York City gallery The Hole brought a taste of the luxurious, wealthy, and extravagant side of Miami to visitors in town during Basel Week Miami. Jonathan Darby – “Congo” @ White Walls

British artist Jonathan Darby recently transformed San Francisco’s White Walls gallery to give the feel of the war torn city of Goma, which is located in the Congo with the population of around a million people. The installation consists of paintings, sounds, photography and film that spotlight the conditions the children of the area live in.
