Preview: Matthias Düwel – “Eden” @ Martha Otero Gallery

Opening this Saturday, August 4 at 6pm is a solo exhibition by Matthias Düwel at Martha Otero Gallery in West Hollywood. The exhibition, curated by Julie Machado, consists of paintings and drawings. The kinetic, vibrant, and energetic works centers on the idea of flux, excess and superabundance. The artist explores global environmental issues and negotiate the surrounding struggles in finding personal eden. Visit the show and immerse yourself in Düwel’s worlds.

Having a good friend like James Jean (featured) certainly came in handy for one lucky couple as the LA-based artist was asked to design special wedding invitations for them. It looks to be fabricated in a similar fashion to the stunning wood piece he created for our City Of Fire show based on the union of two animals from the Chinese Zodiac – the ox and snake. After a short hiatus, the David B. Smith Gallery will be hosting a new group exhibition tomorrow night (August 3rd) that touts an intriguing lineup of artists. Our midweek Art Focus is on an artist new to AM – Nigerian-born, American artist Toyin Odutola. Using only pen and ink on paper, the tools of her trade create a novel look to her portraits which explore ideas of race and refers to skin as geography and terrain where she uses to draw on their individualities and experiences. Tomorrow night (July 31st), in celebration of the US Open of Surfing 2012 (also see PUSH’s effort) and launch of the Phantom Fuse boardshort, Hurley presents STABILIMENTUM, an immersive new installation from James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed). On August 10th, a new series of works from Matt Small (interviewed) will be on display at Blackall Studios in London. Openings: Kamea Hadar – “White Dreams” @ Loft In Space

Last weekend, the our friend Kamea Hadar opened a new solo show at the Loft In Space gallery in Hawaii. Kamea is one of the people who has been instrumental in planning the annual POW WOW art festival (covered) in Oahu and is an artist himself. For this new body of work entitled White Dreams, he put together a series of paintings that deal with his personal experiences with his Jewish and island upbringing. As such, his new paintings reflect influences from both background and include a wall to ceiling installation.
