Releases: Kaws – “Partners” Figure

KAWS fans out there will be pleased to know that the next figure from the street turned contemporary artist has dropped. Partners features a sculpt of the artist standing next to his companion figure. If this looks familiar, it’s because you probably have seen the statue at Disneyland featuring Walt Disney standing next to Mickey Mouse although not cringing like in this version. There’s a little more info here, but also take a look at more detailed shots after the jump…

Showing: Geoff McFetridge @ Cal Poly San Luis Obispo University Art Gallery

Geoff McFetridge, who recently dazzled us with his collaborations and showing with Heath Ceramics, traveled up north a bit to the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for a solo exhibition at their University Art Gallery. The Los Angeles-based McFetridge not only displayed some new paintings with his signature minimalistic wit and associated wall murals, but also gave a well-attended lecture that spanned topics informed by his experience not only artist but also as an animator, graphic designer, and filmmaker. The show is on until February […]

Art Focus / Videos: Riusuke Fukahori

Riusuke Fukahori and his amazing three-dimensional paintings have been selected as our Art Focus this week. With incredible patience and with layer by layer of paint and poured resin, Fukahori builds up these incredible life-like creations of his favorite subject – goldfish. When the 3D pieces are placed in buckets and tubs, the illusion is complete. The Japanese painter just closed an exhibition at ICN Gallery in London and you can check out more photos here. Take a look at the video detailing his process as […]

Openings: Chris Burden – “Metropolis II” @ LACMA

Last week, Chris Burden’s epic kinetic sculpture, Metropolis II, was revealed to the public at the LACMA. The complex and frenetic creation from the LA-based artist took four years to complete and is a model of a miniature city with an emphasis on an intricate transportation system. Included are 18 roadways, including one 6 lane freeway, train tracks, miniature cars, a network of buildings, which support the equivalent of approximately 100,000 cars circulating every hour. Moving to the next stop in our tour of Damien Hirst’s iconic work in his The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 retrospective occurring across the globe at all branches of the  Gagosian, we turn out eyes to Athens. In contrast to the vast Beverly Hill space, the smaller Greek outpost gave us an intimate look at the YBA’s well recognized dotted paintings. More after the jump.

Openings: Allison Sommers – “Potter’s Field” @ Thinkspace

Recently, Thinkspace hosted the work of Allison S0mmers (interviewed) in an exhibition titled Potter’s Field alongside the showing from Esao Andrews (covered). The new body of work showed off Sommers’ unique perspective on themes such as war, violence, and the way these factors affect the human being. Her illustrations invite the viewer to study it up close and although the artworks may not seem large in size, the small details she infuses into her artwork add another level of dimensionality which is hard not to notice. Openings: Sage Vaughn – “Last Year” @ Known Gallery

Over the weekend, the Known Gallery exhibited the work of artist Sage Vaughn (featured) in an exhibit titled Last Year. The first solo showing for the UK-based artist at the gallery featured a collection of large woven editions based on his paintings and on his collages from his Envelope Series. While working with a different type of material, Vaughn still managed to infuse his ironic take on popular culture. Whether it was images referencing the late 70s to early 80s or his use of animals […]
