Openings: Tessar Lo – “The Dying Wishes,” @ Jaski Gallery

Last weekend, the Jaski Gallery provided the walls for Tessar Lo as he presented a whole new collection of a paintings for fans in Amsterdam. Entitled The Dying Wishes, the new work built on an abstracted style that the Toronto-based artist has been developing for a while now. The continued refinement and practice certainly seems to have paid off as the resulting pieces on display were rich in palette, balanced in composition, and visually lush. This week, our Art Focus is on Philadelphia-based Matthew Cox, whose series of medical x-rays and embroidery recently caught our eyes. The Parsons and Otis trained artist has taken radiographs and stitched back in his imagined content partially over the skeletal elements leading to an intriguing new mesh of reality and the imaginary. Previews: Max Snow – “Lock, Stock and Teardrops” @ DUVE Berlin

Opening tomorrow, October 29th, Max Snow will present a new body of work revolving around the theme of pain at DUVE Berlin in Germany. In a two-person exhibition alongside Ali Kepenek, Lock, Stock and Teardops focuses on portraits of individuals laden with scars, both literal and figurative. The New York-based artist’s signature black-and-white photographs, intimate and melancholic, are at times as uncomfortable as they are sublime. The exhibition runs through Saturday, December 10th. Released in conjunction with Ai Weiwei’s photographic exhibition, currently running from October 15th 2011 to March 18th 2012 at Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, Ai Weiwei: New York 1983-1993 chronicles the ten year period spent by the then unknown Chinese immigrant living in a tiny apartment in the East Village. Opening last week alongside Chloe Early at Joshua Liner Gallery was Brooklyn-based painter Ryan McLennan. With his new body of work, Abominations (previewed), McLennan takes a look at the animal kingdom through his unique eyes and creates instances that often reflect and draw parallels to human situations. We liked the raw emotions coming out of his animal friends and the also the interesting use of black backgrounds as opposed to the white that we are used to seeing from him. We are a little late on these photos, but last month, we stopped by the Richard Heller Gallery in West LA to catch the opening of David Jien’s solo exhibition. Entitled The Plight of the Who, the new body of work really put the LA-based artist’s attention to detail and imaginative epic landscapes on display. Last week, AM attended the opening for Chloe Early’s first New York solo exhibition. Feathers and Wax was held at a packed Joshua Liner Gallery and as previewed, this latest series of paintings impressed fans in attendance with a unique mix of dreamy colors & serene figures contrasted by some harsh and aggressive objects such as bullets & bombs.
