Last Saturday night, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City opened a new show featuring some of their young artists, particularly those whose work involved elements of photo-realism. For “The New Realism”, Aaron Nagel, Jeff Ramirez, Jennifer Nehrbass, Linnea Strid, Nathan DeYoung and Pakayla Rae Biehn each put forth their vision of the human form but with their unique twists. More photos after the jump…

The Selby Visits Pharrell

Todd Selby certainly has been invited to visit many of the artists that we admire in the past (ie: Robert Longo & Mr.). This time, he visits Pharrell, who just performed at Art Basel Miami (covered) in his Miami home where his collection of KAWS paintings and sculptural pieces apparently play a prominent role in his interior decorating aside from a Keith Haring piece. The series of commission pieces based on Family Guy as well as rare edition figures certainly has AM jealous – oh, […]

Studio Visit/Preview: Dennis McNett

AM paid a visit to Dennis McNett’s studio while he was finishing up work for his show Reaping Waves and Vital Vessels, opening this Thursday at Joshua Liner Gallery. The space was packed with linocut and woodcut printed paper and hand-painted wood carvings, and McNett described his grand plans for filling the entire gallery with individual works and large-scale installations assembled from the various pieces. Much of the imagery appeared highly influenced by Greek and Norse history and mythology, with representations of wolves, serpents and […]

Openings: Rei Sato – Peter & The Wolf Installation for Works & Process @ Guggenheim

On Saturday afternoon, AM was invited to attend the opening for “Works & Process” at the Guggenheim Museum. The annual production of Sergei Prokofiev’s children’s classic Peter & The Wolf has become a local holiday tradition that brings together some of the brightest artistic talents to create an unforgettable production that weaves art, music and performance into one. The vaunted collaboration brought together NYC Opera’s musical director George Manahan to conduct the Juilliard Ensemble, while fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi narrated the tale. We were especially interested […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Massimo De Carlo

Talk about a booth at Art Basel Miami Beach that had a space full of the world’s hottest artists.  Italy’s Massimo De Carlo’s booth featured scorching youngsters and established artists alike, including Nate Lowman, Dan Colen, and Kanye West favorite George Condo.  Fresh off one of the most talked-about shows in NYC this fall, Dan Colen brought by a beautiful large canvas and a word painting.  Nate Lowman’s triptych included familiar imagery, including his signature bullet hole.  The ever-present Condo had a row of small […]

Showing: Andrew Schoultz – “Melt Down” @ Project Space

Building on his solo a few months back, Compound Eyes of the World (covered), Andrew Schoultz debuted a new body of work last week at the Arkitip and Incase showspace in Los Angeles. Melt Down transformed Project Space with the geopolitical musings of Schoultz with an immersive installations that took over the walls and floors of the gallery centered around a tank breaking through his familiar “brick” walls. Anyone who enters the gallery through January 9th will be confronted with the full force of Schoultz’ […]

It’s always nice to see multiple artistic movements, […]

Openings: “Dreams Deferred” @ The Chinese American Museum

Last week, the Chinese American Museum (CAM) in Los Angeles opened their doors to an art show focused on immigration reform. Although the bulk of the problems the Chinese in America have had with this topic has been in the past, it is always important to bring light to some forgotten history as there is much we can learn that we can apply to the controversial topic in the present. Dreams Deferred (teased) featured many compelling pieces from some artists that you will be sure […]

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Rhona Hoffman Gallery

As we strolled down the aisle’s of Art Basel Miami Beach, our eyes wandered towards paintings that were undeniably and unmistakeably by a certain artist.  That artist is Kehinde Wiley and they were hung on the walls of  Chicago’s Rhona Hoffman Gallery’s booth.  The pieces are from The World Stage: India-Sri Lanka series and feature – what else – portraits of various men.  Meet the rest of them after the jump…
