2010 Whitney Annual Gala & Studio Party

AM recently attended the Whitney American Museum’s Annual Gala and Studio Party celebration. The focus was to raise funds to continue the goal of supporting emerging and established American artists. Not only did the event raise more than $2.65 million this year with the help of art patrons all over New York and the US, the gala was also a celebration for a new project which will bring the Whitney to the Meatpacking district of Manhattan. Being in the digital age, it seemed the theme was to […]

Preview: “Block Party” @ Carmichael Gallery

This Saturday night, November 13th, Carmichael Gallery will be holding a “Block Party” in Culver City with a group exhibition from Boxi, Krystian Truth Czaplicki, Gregor Gaida, Simon Haas, Sixeart, and Dan Witz.  Some of you may be more familiar with Witz’ eye-catching street work, but his apparently his fine art skills will be in full effect with a continuation of his series of paintings on the study of light. It will be nice to finally see one of these in person. More preview images […]

Openings: Frieze Art Fair 2010 – Part I

Like Basel week for Switzerland and Armory week for New York, London has a signature week for art and it’s centralized around the Frieze Art Fair. This year, AM made the trip out to catch the well produced affair which was overwhelming in the amount of art displayed. Like most major art fairs, we needed to go back after day one to soak in more visual goodness. On our first pass, we stumbled on some notable works from George Condo, fresh photos from Ryan McGinley and a new direction from […]

Openings: “Pattern Recognition” @ Subliminal Projects

Last weekend, Subliminal Projects played host to “Pattern Recognition”, a group exhibition from a great set of artists including Seonna Hong, Nikki McClure, Dalek (interviewed), Richard Colman (interviewed), and Souther Salazar. Particularly eye catching for us were the colorful works of Seonna and Souther although the works of Dalek and Colman seemed to fit the premise of the show a little more closely. More opening pics after the jump…

Reminder: Ron English – “Status Factory” @ Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion (OCC)

Apparently, that mural Ron English (featured) was working on in Miami that we first brought you here is completed.  He ended with a cool extension of the wall piece onto the ground and with the placement of some of his “Camo Deer” figures. We first saw these pieces at his impressive “Status Factory” pop-up show in New York (covered) and for west coast fans of his work, make sure you stop by on Friday night (November 12th) as the show moves to the Frank M. […]

Video: Anish Kapoor – “Turning the World Upside Down” @ Kensington Gardens

For those who enjoyed the glimpses we brought you of Anish Kapoor’s sculptures currently showing in Kensington Gardens, you might appreciate this video from Vernissage TV as well. The four works on display through March 13th, 2011 include Non Object (Spire), Sky Mirror (2009), Sky Mirror (2006), and C-Curve. Discuss Anish Kapoor here.

Previews: Kelsey Brookes – “Caped Creatures” @ Circleculture Gallery (Berlin)

When we last talked to Kelsey Brookes (featured), it was at the fantastic “Come As You Are” group show at the PRISM (covered). Time flies as his next solo show that he mentioned to us that day is already almost here. “Caped Creatures” opens on November 18th at the Circleculture Gallery in Berlin and will include the San Diego area based artist’s paintings featuring his signature multi-colored explosions as well as the spinning pieces he introduced back at a show in July (covered). Now we […]

Openings: Thinkspace Five Year Anniversary Show

Last Saturday night marked an important event at Thinkspace Gallery history – their five year anniversary! Drawing from a long list of artists, many whom got their first break at the Silverlake and now recently relocated to Culver City gallery, the walls were filled with great pieces from the contributors who wanted to make sure they paid proper tribute. Amidst the crowded rooms, we spotted KMNDZ (seen above), with his wall mural and mini-show. Take a look at his and all the rest of the […]

Preview: Tiffany Bozic – “Confiding to Strangers” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This Thursday night, art fans in New York are in for a treat as Tiffany Bozic will be in town with a new collection of works for the Joshua Liner Gallery. Entitled “Confiding to Strangers”, the new body of work stopped us in our tracks when we first saw the preview. The San Francisco based artist is really showing an attention to detail, subject matter, and composition that elevates her signature renderings of plant, animal, and insect life to the next level which has us […]

Openings: KAWS – “Pay the Debt to Nature” @ Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris)

Street artist turned pop icon KAWS unveiled a new body of work, entitled Pay the Debt to Nature (previewed), at the Paris branch of Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin last night. Highlighting his immediately identifiable style though a collection of new acrylic paintings, the most well-known cartoon character of the 21st century took center stage in signature KAWS fashion. With clean lines and bold colors, Spongebob was dissected into puzzle-like fragments and pieced back together into multi-panel assemblages, a unique technique first seen early this year during […]
