Videos: Dos Equis by Kaws

You may remember when we first passed along the news that KAWS was collaborating with Dos Equis in creating a specially packaged version of their popular beer. Now, the Mexican company, whose name translates to “two x’s” has released a promotional video of the “creative process” from the street turned contemporary artist whose signature imagery also includes “two x’s”. Back again 2 years after his exhibition in Versailles, Jeff Koons is set to open his latest show of his famed Popeye series at France’s Galarie Jerome De Noirmont. The opening will occur September 16th and coincidentally will be the same weekend his peer Takashi Murakami opens his solo at Versailles. Via Happy Famous Artists. Discuss Jeff Koons here.

Openings: David Choong Lee – “Acquiring Signal” @ LeBasse Projects

Representing San Francisco, the amazing David Choong Lee recently hauled down over 400 of his favorite works to LeBasee Projects in Culver City. The prolifically staged exhibition is as complete a representation of the artist’s skills as one imagines you can get. Lee takes over the entire gallery himself and the solo show features installations of panels, some from found materials, such as wooden wine crates, and has an architectural feel, as they rest on tables and balance on pillars. The artist explores such social […]

Studio Visits: Marcus Freeman

AM came across Marcus Freeman’s paintings last year, and we instantly loved how he mixes a superflat representational style of depicting the built environment with the cleanliness of Ed Ruscha & Patrick Caulfield’s pop art stylings. Some of the elements of Industrial architecture and landscapes used within his paintings are found and photographed locally by Freeman, and some are either assembled from a series of his found sources or invented based upon sketched concepts. We arranged to take a look around his design studio, where […]

Openings: “Love Conquers All” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last Saturday night, AM stopped by the “Love Conquers All” show in Culver City at the Thinkspace Gallery. The exhibition’s concept was based on the struggle of the gay community for equality with part of the proceeds were donated to Equality California. Things don’t always turn out well for themed group shows, but this time, many of the artists were able to maintain their signature imagery yet at the same time subtly produce relevant works. More images from the opening after the jump…

Highlights: Recommended Openings for this Weekend

With the quiet summer art season in full effect, the list of recommended shows is shorter than usual but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any quality shows. For example, take a look at the possible crazy installs coming up for David Choong Lee as he gets ready for his show at LeBasse Projects this weekend. As the art world becomes increasingly year-round, eventually there will probably be no lulls in the calendar at all. More listings after the jump…

Interview with Gaye Advert / Preview: “Beyond Punk” @ Signal Gallery

Two of our cultural loves come together this week in an artistic punk rock mash-up. “Beyond Punk” is a group art exhibition curated by femme punk icon Gaye Advert, the former bass guitarist of The Adverts. The show features a selection of musicians from the punk era who were either artists prior to being engulfed in the music scene or have turned to art as their form of expression. Several artists featured in the show are non-musicians, but have been long time followers of the […]
