Basel Week HK ’18 / Showing: Yoshitomo Nara – “Ceramic Works and…” @ Pace Gallery

A couple days ago, during Basel Week Hong Kong, Pace Gallery inaugurated its second gallery in Hong Kong (12/F H Queen’s 80 Queen’s Road Central) with an exhibition by Yoshitomo Nara entitled Ceramic Works and… As the title suggests, the center of the new space was dominated by ceramic head sculptures from the Japanese artist, three dimensional representations of his instantly recognizable anime-inspired portraits. One of our personal favorites from this year’s Art Central was the solo showcase by Mike Lee at the Over The Influence’s booth. Simultaneously showing the NY-based artist’s Hong Kong debut along with a solo show by Tadashi Kawamata in their local space, the gallery presented a sold out exhibition at the fair that included some of the largest pieces Lee has ever produced. Returning to work with Wunderkammern after a showing in their Rome location (covered) back in 2014, Aakash Nihalani (interviewed) is opening his latest solo tonight with the gallery’s space in Milan. Entitled Tilt, the new body of work will include a site-specific installation and a series of small-format works created with ink and paint on paper. On the 27th of April, the Art Central fair in Hong Kong opened its door to the public, showcasing the works selected by 100 leading international galleries, 75% of which hail from the Asia Pacific. After a successful opening (covered) in Tokyo at Perrotin last week, KAWS dropped the second verse of his tour of Asia with a showing at the gallery’s Hong Kong location. The pieces on display played out like part two of a cohesive body of work featuring abstract hints of the beloved cartoon and pop culture characters that the Brooklyn-based artist continues to be fascinated with. Releases: KAWS – “BFF (Pink)” Figure

Starting tomorrow at 10 am (EST), KAWS will be releasing the pink version of his BFF vinyl figure thru his website. Also available at that time will be the black colorway, and for those completists out there, the MoMA design store will have all three colors (blue, black, and pink) at their physical location as well as online starting tomorrow.
