Openings: KAWS @ Galerie Perrotin (Tokyo)

Last night, AM stopped by the Tokyo branch of Galerie Perrotin to catch the opening of KAWS’ solo show, his first of two in Asia with Hong Kong coming up. Attended by his Japanese admirers (some from his Original-Fake days), international superfans, and the usual cast of locally-based artist friends, the opening showcased the Brooklyn-based artist’s newest pop culture character-based abstractions including a sweet Snoopy airplane shaped painting.Take a look at more photos from the opening reception below… Discuss this show here. ON THE MOVE, a new group show opened tonight at KIRK Gallery in Denmark featuring the work of Fintan Mcgee, Joram Roukes, Robert Proch, Christian Verginer, Telmo Miel (seen above), Wiley Wallace, James Bullough, Ratur & Sckaro and Wes21. The gallery in Aalborg is responsible for the Out in the Open project that has brought many muralists to the area including some who are included in this exhibition. Releases: Patrick Martinez – “I Am” Neon Multiple

Neons are one of Patrick Martinez’s most recognizable series of work, oftentimes utilizing hip-hop inspired snippets of text. For this latest limited edition (run of 25 + 5 APs) entitled I Am, the Los Angeles-based artist has referenced 1968 civil rights protest signs, continuing the aspect of his work that deals with social issues. Releases: James Jean x Defonce – Custom Chocolate Bar

James Jean (interviewed) recently announced the release of a collaborative product with Defonce Chocolatiers that feature his artworks and design. The custom bar features cannabis-infused white chocolate splashed with Rosé champagne and showered with pistachios and strawberries. Following up on their show in 2014 (covered), the Miaz Brothers recently opened up their solo with Lazarides at their new Mayfair home, Lazinc Sackville. Entitled Anonymous, the 16 paintings on display are a continuation of the Italian duo’s Antimatter series, comprised of the out of focus portraits (and one sculpture) that they have become famous for. The haunting large-format canvases are created using a meticulous layering of spray paint and feature more experimental and bolder brush strokes this go around. Currently at the Library Street Collective in Detroit, Margo Wolowiec has a show on display featuring her “#rosegarden” series of works.
