NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal is known by many nicknames: “the Big Aristotle”, “the MDE”, “the Big Shaqtus”, “The Big Baryshnikov” and we can now dub him “the Big Curator”? ARCO Madrid ’10: KAWS

Opening his solo show at Javier Lopez was not that only reason KAWS was in Madrid this week. He was also exhibiting at ARCO Madrid, one of the largest annual art fairs in Europe. It’s been a big couple of months for Faile. With so much going on, such as their collaborative show with BAST in London and their 10-year retrospective at Lazarides Gallery, AM is still trying to catch up with the scorching hot collective. We recently made the trip to Beverly Hills to view “Meet Me Inside” (previewed), a group show at Gagosian Gallery, to check out their wood puzzle pieces, as well as other spectacular art work by Gagosian’s A-list artists. It looks like KAWS traveled to Spain for the opening of his latest show (previewed) at Galería Javier López in Madrid. Three fresh canvases were on display along with a cool purple bronze. For this new body of work, Brian continues to explore his monotone technique in large paintings of SpongeBob varations and also a surprise return to his iconic Chum in one piece. Recently, we teased you about KAWS’ latest show with Galería Javier López in Madrid. We now see that there are some pics giving us an inside look at the gallery space. Looks like KAWS continuing to work with the monotone technique that we saw at his previous shows with Gering Lopez and OHWOW. It opens tomorrow at 7:30pm so drop by if you can! Opening alongside Antistrot last weekend in San Francisco (covered) was the phenomenal group show, “Never a Dull Moment” at White Walls. Featuring a stellar lineup including Augustine Kofie, The Clayton Brothers (featured), Remi/Rough, and many more, this latest showing is another expertly curated exhibition by the dandy darling, iO Tillet Wright. Featuring a refreshing blend of both photography and painting, this is one show that truly lives up to it’s name. More photos after the jump.

Last week, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal premiered an exhibition by Canadian artist Marcel Dzama called “For a Thousand Tricks”. From what we saw at the David Zwirner booth at Art Basel, the show looks to be a wild one. Filled with his signature illustrative style using nostalgic references contrasted by the irony of politics and eroticism, Marcel always finds very subtle ways to bash his points home.
