For those who spend a lot of time on the internet, um yes, like us, you will have seen some sort of parody by now involving Adolf Hitler in scenes from the German film “Downfall”. The Führer, played by actor Bruno Ganz, can be seen berating his generals during the last days of the Nazi regime, except the subtitles are all rewritten for comedic effect. A promising new artist that we have been keeping our eye on, Linnea Strid, is participating in a great group show this weekend at Thinkspace. The Swedish painter, who has so far impressed collectors with her realistic rendering of water and glass, will join a a group of talented young artist including Josie Morway, Dabs Myla, Wesley Burt, Jacub Gagnon, John Park, and Craig ‘Skibs’ Barker. AM continues its coverage of the London February Auctions (see our Christie’s preview) with a look at Phillips de Pury’s Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales (February 12 – 13 2010). Overall, there are fewer outstanding pieces available here than at Christie’s or Sotheby’s, however there are still many fantastic, iconic pieces up for grabs, including several Basquiats, a strong Banksy, an early Kaws set, and a fabulous Ai Weiwei triptych (above). On Thursday night, Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his latest solo show, “In Case You’re Lost”, at San Francisco’s Frey Norris. The vibrant collection of paintings, sculptures, and installations, consisting of what we affectionately call the “2.0” era of Matsu’s exciting career, were welcomed by the enthusiastic bay area crowd. Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’10 – Rental Gallery

New York’s Rental Gallery had a fantastic booth at Art Los Angeles Contemporary, featuring artwork in a range of mediums, including sculpture, photography, painting, and mixed media. They featured artists from their talented roster, including Andrea Longacre-White, Matthew Chambers, and artist, editor, and musician Brendon Fowler. The highlight was Fowler’s collision of framed artwork, with a row of pretty floral pieces interrupted by a photograph crashing violently along the middle (pictured above). After recently creating a video for Pringle of Scotland, photographer Ryan McGinley has moved on to the next project in his young directing career. “Lightness Of Being An Olympian” is a video he directed for the New York Times about the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. A pretty big show that seems to have been flying under the radar is KAWS’ upcoming show this month in Spain. Galería Javier López will be paying host to a new body of work from the New York-based street turned contemporary artist with the opening set for February 17th. It’s been almost a year since his solo at Honor Fraser and we’re sure that we aren’t the only ones fiendin’ for their KAWS fix. Discuss KAWS here.

Kehinde Wiley x PUMA (Paris Opening)

You may recall a project we told you about recently between Kehinde Wiley and PUMA for the World Cup this year. If you remember, the exhibition of paintings Kehinde created of three African soccer stars as well as a portrait with all three together representing the unity of Africa traveled to Berlin for an official unveiling. It has now moved on to Paris and Guillotine has all the pics including the individual portraits. More pics after the jump.
