This weekend, Galerie Perrotin in Paris hosted the opening of a new show from Aya Takano entitled The Jelly Civilization Chronicle. The ethereal and dreamy 26 paintings and drawings on display are the preparatory studies for a 186-page manga of the same name from the Japanese artist. On February 16th, the Croatian Association of Visual Artists held a quadruple solo show presentation by some fresh young talents. Igor Taritaš was one of the artists that had a chance to present his work at the unique space of Galerija Prsten in Zagreb, along with Iva Habus, Radovan Kunić and Maya Rozman. Currently at the GR Gallery location in New York, a group show featuring Felipe Pantone, Gilbert Hsiao, Nadia Costantini, and Sandi Renko is on view thru April 16th. On March 3rd, Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Motoazabu, Tokyo, opened a debut Japan solo exhibition by American artist Austin Lee. Serious Works is sort of a parody title for a show that consists of paintings and sculptures done in Lee’s colorful, naive style. For this showcase, the NYC-based artist created an extensive installation within the gallery space. Sporting a cool grey color reminiscent of his iconic vinyl figures, the KAWS x Air Jordan 4 is set for release later this month. Featuring graphic detailing from the Brooklyn-based artist and his famous double x’s on the heel tab as well as a glow in the dark outsole. Jeff Soto (interviewed) just released a new giclée print through Pangeaseed entitled The Magic Message. Hand embellished and featuring deckled edges, the 18 x 18″ edition was produced in a run of 50, costs $100, and will come signed and numbered. The image highlights the Atlantic Goliath Grouper classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Amidst all of the street art during this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii, one of the more unique elements of the event that could be observed were the portrait sessions with James Jean (interviewed). Featuring a diverse selection of subjects, the six chosen ones sat for a few hours with the gifted artist as he masterfully captured their visages in a series of loose yet detailed paintings.
