Preview: INLE @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Next Thursday, March 11th, the highly anticipated INLE group show will open at Gallery 1988’s Melrose location. Curated by Greg Simkins, the exhibition has been a long time coming for the LA-based artist as much of his work references his childhood favorite, Watership Down, a book that has had a profound impact on him as an artist. Featuring one of the best lineup of artists we have seen in a long time, this is definitely one show you don’t want to miss. Take some time […]

Preview: “Suggestivism” @ GCAC

Coming hot off the heels of Joe Sorren’s (featured) epic retrospective at the gallery, Suggestivism, a group exhibition curated by Nathan Spoor, opens this Saturday at CSUF Grand Central Art Center. It features over 50 different works (old and new) that embody Suggestivism, a term first used in the late nineteenth century describing an organic process of art making that suggests an ambiguous narrative. The exhibition features artists who illustrate ideas or subjects whose relationships point towards a loose and open narrative, constructed by the […]

Contest: Dan May – “Echoes of Existence” Print

A show definitely worth checking out that is currently showing at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles is Dan May’s (interviewed) new body of work – “Into the Wild”. We last saw his incredibly detailed paintings of gentle creatures and humanoids at the Rotofugi Gallery several months ago. Dan has kindly sent over an AP print of his “Echoes of Existence” painting to give away to one of our lucky readers.  Just leave a comment guessing how many hours it took to complete the actual painting […]

Preview: “WE HEART WOOD Jibibuts Custom Show” @ Munky King

The “WE HEART WOOD” customs show opens tonight, April 8th, at Munky King in Melrose with dynamic duo Noferin inviting 30 of their artists friends to customize their latest blind box mini wood toys – Jibibuts. Not all artists have what it takes to paint on 3D surfaces, but masters of the art like Jeremiah Ketner, Doktor A, Dan May, Yoskay Yamamoto, and Stella Im Hultberg make it look easy with an awesome collection little works of art. More preview images after the jump.

Preview: Dan May – “Beneath the Noise” @ Rotofugi

Opening tonight at Rotofugi is a new body of work from Dan May (interviewed). “Beneath the Noise” features some nice size pieces like “Bittersweet Departure” (seen above) sized at 18 x 18″ as well as some affordable smaller pieces. It also looks like Dan is continuing to incorporate the human form into his imagery with his usual stunning attention to detail and color. See some pics of the install after the jump…

Preview: Dan May – “The Nature of Things to Come” @ Copro Gallery

After his last successful solo show at Copro Gallery in February, Dan May (interviewed) is back again with a mini show entitled “The Nature of Things to Come.” Opening on September 5th, Dan will be exhibiting along with Matt Dangler (interviewed) and Noferin. May is someone that we have been following for a very long time, and it’s always nice to see artists mature and come into their own. As seen in our favorite piece from the show “The Persuasion of Penelope” (above), his narrative […]

Openings: Crazy 4 Cult 3D @ Gallery 1988 LA

AM had the pleasure of attending the opening of Crazy 4 Cult 3D show at Gallery 1988 (LA) a couple weeks ago. The 3rd installment of the wildly popular group show again brought together some of our favorite artists to reinterpret some of the most addictive cult films of all time. Again, we saw the perennial favorites such as The Professional, Edward Scissorhands, Office Space and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But what we enjoyed were some new cult films such as The Jerk, Never […]

Opening this Thursday night, July 16th (7 – 10pm), attendees will do well for themselves to get there early as lines will be long. If you fancy yourself an expert on cult movies, take a look at […]

Preview: “Monster?” Group Show @ Copro Gallery

Monsters are attacking Bergamot Station!  Well, at least for the similarly named group show at Copro Gallery this Saturday night curated by none other than Travis Louie (interviewed).  Well respected in the art world and a talented artist himself, Travis was able to put together an impressive list of participants for exhibition.  Not only did he include regulars like Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed), Ron English (featured), Dan May (interviewed), Kris Kuksi, Chet Zar, Brian Despain (interviewed), Ana Bagayan (featured), and Tessar Lo, he also made sure […]

Openings: Hi-Fructose Group Show – “Overdose” @ Copro Gallery

Upon entering the gallery, you will notice several great pieces from “Overdose” on display in the gallery’s front room. The majority of the exhibition’s body of work is displayed in the gallery’s main room. A table was set up over in the smaller wing of the gallery for the Hi-Fructose Collected Edition 1 book signing. Artists Greg “Craola” Simkins, Gary Baseman, Attaboy, photographer Brian McCarty, and Joe Ledbetter were all on hand for […]
