Currently showing in Detroit at Library Street Collective is a four person exhibition featuring contributions from Paul Kremer, Mark Flood, MOMO, and REVOK. Entitled Machine Show and curated by Kremer, the focus was on the unique art-making tools, processes, and methodology behind their work. On August 19th, Library Street Collective will be opening a solo show from AJ Fosik (featured) entitled From Ripe to Rot. Inspired by city he was born in, the Motor City’s continued evolution, transformation, and reinvention fuels the ideas behind this new body of work featuring his intricate wood assemblages. Fosik’s practice is informed by folk art, taxidermy, and cultural rituals which can be seen in the three dimensional beasts he creates as well in the newer more contained compositional pieces. Showing: Faile – “The Size of the Fight” @ Library Street Collective (Detroit)

Last weekend, Library Street Collective opened a new solo from Faile (featured) entitled The Size of the Fight, the duo’s first show in Detroit. Along with originals, prints, and sculptural works, one of the walls featured a mural from the Patrick’s as they took inspiration from the Motor City’s revival in the last several years. The Brooklyn-based artists also unveiled five large-scale painted, stenciled, and silkscreened works on wood panels in the adjacent alleyway aka “The Belt,” the gallery’s public exhibition space (more on this later). Coming up on June 24th, Library Street Collective will be presenting new work from Faile (featured) in their first Detroit exhibition. The title of the show, The Size of the Fight, references Mark Twain’s quote, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog,” which can be applied to the Motor City’s revival in the last several years. On April 27th, Library Street Collective will be presenting new works from Kelsey Brookes, his second solo with the gallery in Detroit. Entitled Position, the show continues the San Diego-based artist’s practice of combining his love for science and his artistic vision, drawing from his background as a former biologist and from his interest in psychedelics. Openings: Sam Friedman – “LOVE SONGS” @ Library Street Collective

Showing through April 8 at the Library Street Collective in Detroit is an exhibition from Sam Friedman. For LOVE SONGS, the artist from New York has a series of canvases as well as over 30 paintings on paper on display that look back on his exploration of beach scenes and sunsets. Utilizing a variety of techniques that speak to his background, the colorful work continues his deconstruction and revision of natural landscapes, achieved through a balanced mix of abstraction and figurative elements. Tomorrow night (February 11th) in Detroit, Library Street Collective will be presenting new work from Sam Friedman in a show entitled LOVE SONGS. Continuing his deconstruction of natural landscapes, the New York-based artist has prepared a series of canvases as well as over 30 paintings on paper that revisit his earlier exploration of beach scenes and sunsets. Showing: Swoon – “Thalassa” @ Detroit Institute of Arts

At the end of last month, Swoon (interviewed) unveiled the latest iteration of her Thalassa installation at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Fans of the her work can check out the suspended sculptural piece at the Woodward Avenue entrance through the end of May of next year. This display of Swoon’s work will round out nicely her contributions to the art scene of the Motor City to go along with her exhibition opening soon at Library Street Collective as well as a mural project in the Jefferson-Chalmers district. With this year’s Murals In The Market from 1xRUN in full swing, photos of the new public art are starting to be shared all over the interwebs. One of the pieces that grabbed our attention was this new wall painted by 1010 entitled Abyss. Along with unveiling an installation at the Detroit Institute of Arts (covered) while in the Motor City, Swoon (interviewed) will also be opening a solo show at Library Street Collective on October 10th.
