Previews: Eric Shaw – ‘Throw Off Your Mental Chains’ @ Breeze Block Gallery

This June sees Eric Shaw’s psychedelic gouache paintings coming to Breeze Block Gallery in Portland for his solo exhibition Throw Off Your Mental Chains. Alongside Shaw’s more familiar abstract works, the New York artist has created a series of portrait-based pieces using his distinctive shapes and super-flat elements as seen in our preview images below. If like us, you enjoy the superflat yet explosive paintings of New York painter Eric Shaw, you might be interested to see his work come to life. Shaw recently collaborated with indie rock band Wild Nothing and director / animator Hayley Atkins on the video for their single A Dancing Shell. Furthermore, Eric Shaw also produced the limited edition packaging (pictured below) for the band’s Empty Estate ep, from which the track is taken. Discuss this artist here.

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. Following directly on from Part 1 of our coverage of the busy Space//Form opening, AM now delves a little deeper pictorially into the artwork created for this huge group exhibition of 110 artists with a series of pictures where the art is more viewable (like the Mark Dean Veca installation above). The other weekend, Fecal Face Dot Gallery hosted the opening of a joint exhibition with local artist, Henry Gunderson (directly below) and Brooklyn-based Eric Shaw (above). The two artists’ work complimented the other nicely when displayed in the same venue. Each artist has their own style and take on using geometrical shapes and colors, creating images that were surreal and thought-provoking. Check out photos from the opening below.

Following our recently curated group exhibitions in Hong Kong; East West Connect and Los Angeles; City of Fire, AM’s UK correspondent Sven Davis has branched out with his own curatorial endeavour Space//Form.
