Streets: Shepard Fairey (New York)

Shepard Fairey (interviewed) recently unveiled a mural featuring his iconic imagery on the rooftop of Great Bowery, a fashion and art agency collective in Manhattan. Wrapped around a water tower (one of our favorite things to see painted), the piece entitled Power & Equality was meant to celebratet the LES Girls Club and board member Rosario Dawson for everything they do in the neighborhood. The project brings things full circle for Shep as he was one of the young vandals to tag up the landmark graffiti spot back in […]

Showing: Jamian Juliano-Villani – “Let’s Kill Nicole” @ Massimo De Carlo (London)

The London branch of Massimo De Carlo is currently hosting Let’s Kill Nicole, the newest solo show from Jamian Juliano-Villani. For her second exhibition with the gallery, the American artist has painted a series of surreal pieces (as well as created a cheeky installation featuring a stuffed animal) that showcase her skill with melding photorealistic elements with more abstract and cartoonish details as well as her unique sense of humor. Referencing a diverse mish mash of source material ranging from pop culture to art history, Juliano-Villani’s unlikely amalgamations are surprising and […]

Streets: Eron // QUAI 36 (France)

A couple months ago, Eron was able to complete a striking new mural for Phase I of the QUAI 36 project in France centered just outside of Paris in Versailles. Painted in his signature sepia, the piece featuring hands grabbing and releasing doves highlighting the Italian street artist’s skill with the trompe l’oeil technique. Meant to beautify the area where the 1096 social housing units were built in the 1960s, the wall marks Eron’s first public work in France. Showing through September 22nd, the exhibition features hyperrealistic sculptures from a roster of internationally recognized artists like Patricia Piccinini, Ron Mueck, Kazuhiro Tsuji, and more. Streets: Mark Jenkins @ Rose Beton Festival (Toulouse)

Working in Toulouse for the third Rose Beton Festival (see 2016), Mark Jenkins (interviewed) has created a duo of striking installations so far (with two more to come). Utilizing the human form, the American artist stages disconcerting urban interventions of which these first two pieces are prime examples. The first is what seems to be a girl with her face hidden by her hair hanging from a swing from the Saint Pierre bridge while the second features his signature hooded figure blending in with the statue of Pierre Goudouli at […]

Recently at Complexcon in Chicago, Felipe Pantone was on hand to present his collaboration with Hennessy on his design for the V.S Cognac Bottle. The Argentinian-Spanish artist follows in the line of some distinguished artists such as Kaws, Futura, Os Gemeos, Shepard Fairey, Ryan McGinness, and Scott Campbell who have previously worked on the bottle. Discuss […]

Showing: James Jarvis – “Throw-ups” @ NANZUKA

Opening last week, Throw-ups at NANZUKA in Tokyo marks James Jarvis’ (interviewed) first solo showing in Japan in the last four years. The exhibition continues the British artist’s laser-cut wooden relief works that were last seen earlier this year in Paris (covered), but also features a wide range of techniques including new spray paintings, colored acrylic panels, a bronze sculptural work, and of course drawings. For Jarvis, daily drawing forms the basis of his practice and those figurative musings are where his signature characters originate and then evolve into […]

The Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts (MNAAG) in Paris, home to the largest collection of Asian arts in Europe, recently gave carte blanche to a site-specific installation created by artist Mr.. and curated by Pharrell Williams. Located on the fourth-floor rotunda beneath the dome of the main building, Call to Action runs until September 23rd. The project started five years ago based on an idea by Pharrell Williams, who is a self-proclaimed fan of the Japanese artist’s work. The result of this longstanding collaboration is an […]

Showing: Sickboy – ‘Dreamworlds’ @ That Art Gallery

Sickboy (interviewed) is currently presenting an exhibition of 16 new works at That Art Gallery in Bristol. Dreamworlds is the first solo show back in his adopted home-city since 2010 and represents a further progression in the development of the painter’s studio practice. Familiar motifs from the artist’s lexicon are still present, such as the fluttering birds which featured more heavily in his early work, depictions of the ephemera and curios which the artist collects and the walking heart that has more recently been made into an […]

Showing: “KAWS:HOLIDAY” (Japan)

Earlier today, another leg of the Asian KAWS:HOLIDAY tour (see Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong) was unveiled at the Fumotoppara Camping Ground in Japan with the iconic Mt. Fuji looming in the background (on view through July 24). Teaming up with AllRightsReserved again to present larger than life versions of his signature Companion figure, the American artist has opted this time for a massive reclined 40-meter inflatable. As in the other countries, the public showing featured a release at DING DONG Takuhaibin of related merchandise including vinyl figures, t-shirts, cushions, […]
