LA Art Show ’14: Littletopia

Last week when AM stopped by the LA Art Show, we made sure to pay a visit to the special Littletopia section curated by Red Truck Gallery. Featuring an array of artists and art that is seldom seen at the event, this part of the fair saw a healthy and steady stream of visitors. Participants included galleries like Sloan Fine Art, Breeze Block, La Luz de Jesus, Last Rites, Roq La Rue, Spoke Art, Thinkspace, and Varnish Fine Art. Openings: Ernest Zacharevic – “Art Is Rubbish Is Art” (Malaysia)

Last week in Malaysia, Ernest Zacharevic opened a solo show at the Old Hin Bus Depot, mirroring his street work with paintings indoors as well as multiple installations and murals outdoors (more on these later). Recap: Sol Lewitt @ Paula Cooper Gallery

Back in the fall, Paula Cooper Gallery transformed their main Chelsea space with a Sol Lewitt piece entitled Wall Drawing #564: Complex forms with color ink washes superimposed. Lewitt is generally considered one of the most important figures in conceptual art and is known for creating detailed instructions for art works, which then could be made and remade by trained craftsmen. Basel Week Miami ’13: Rubell Family Collection – “28 Chinese”

While down in Miami for Art Basel Week, we took the opportunity to check out 28 Chinese, the current exhibition at the Rubell Family Collection. As the name implies, the show consisted of paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos by 28 contemporary Chinese artists which were acquired by the Rubells’ during multiple visits to China between 2001 and 2012. Openings: “Conjoined IV” @ Copro Gallery

Over the weekend in Los Angeles, the Copro Gallery opened the fourth edition of their sculptural group show curated by Chet Zar (interviewed). Entitled Conjoined IV: A New Beginning, the exhibition featured the work of many talented artists and sculptors out there, some of which work in the film industry. One of the stand out pieces was an amazingly realistic tribute to Andy Warhol by Kazuhiro Tsuji (seen above next to his work) that must be seen in person to be believed. AM recently got the chance to visit Wayne White in his Los Angeles studio. His workspace is as amazing and surreal as you would imagine, including four foot tall eyes and an oversized mask of former president Lyndon Johnson. Yesterday, AM stopped by the 19th edition Los Angeles Art Fair at the LA Convention Center to see what the art world had to offer. Earlier this week, Josh Keyes (interviewed) released images to the first installment of his Far Side of the World online show. The Old Ones sees the Portland-based artist explore the origins of the animals and creatures that inhabit his paintings, some larger than life. Openings: Saber – “The Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (London)

After Newcastle, LA-based graffiti artist SABER (interviewed) launched the second installment of his first European solo show The Ugly American at The Outsiders in London. Suffering from epilepsy and being denied healthcare, the politically engaged artist decided to voice some issues and battles for universal care by attacking and transforming iconic images of US and Union Jack flags, using found packing crates. Saber’s abstract paintings, made with layered collages and painted paper, combine harmoniously to form a delicate texture with his strong and powerful sharp signature lines.
