Damien Hirst Flag Part Of London Olympics Closing Ceremony

With the Olympics coming to an end, all of London celebrated with a star-studded and rousing closing ceremony featuring some of England’s greatest cultural exports. Damien Hirst was asked to design one of the many renditions of the Union Jack in his signature spin-painting looking motif which was unveiled as part of the event. Last week, AM took a road trip up to the ICA Boston to catch the opening week of Os Gemeos’ first ever solo museum exhibition in the U.S. The twins Otávio & Gustavo Pandolfo (aka Os Gemeos) took Beantown by storm with not only a mind blowing mural at Dewey Square’s MassDot building, but also took over two of the ICA’s exhibition rooms with a great selection of art including paintings and sculptural work. Although already open to the public as of a couple days ago, the Boston ICA will be celebrating the start of the Os Gemeos exhibition (previewed) today with a waterfront launch party, complete with Caipirinhas, Brazilian street food, and DJs who will take visitors to the heart of the artists’ native São Paulo. Futura x Hennessy Launch Party (Los Angeles)

Last night, Hennessy held the Los Angeles premiere (see NY launch here) of the VS cognac bottle designed by Futura at an exclusive launch party held at the Milk Studios in Hollywood. The special bottle is a continuation of the brand’s collaboration with high profile artists (see KAWS) and it seemed that no expense was spared with Diplo and Santigold on hand to entertain the crowd. Not only did Known Gallery host an opening reception from SABER (interviewed) on Saturday night (covered), the Los Angeles showspace also featured new works from REVOK in a joint exhibition. Entitled Gilgamesh, the collection of intricately assembled sculptural pieces represent a carefully selected montage of found materials garnered from the slowly decaying areas of Detroit, REVOK’s current city of choice and source of inspiration. Over the weekend, the Known Gallery in the heart of Los Angeles brought the summer heat with a joint exhibition between SABER (interviewed) & REVOK, two LA’s most wanted. First up are photos of the graf-inspired works from SABER collectively entitled Beautification. For this showing, record breaking artist decided to move away from the flag-inspired works that he has been working on of late and created a set of mostly figurative paintings centered around urban landscapes superimposed with his signature flowing script. Just this past Saturday night, the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles hosted Go West, a joint show between Kris Kuksi and David Ellis curated by Joshua Liner that is a followup to the Go East exhibition that was hosted at their New York last May where the two galleries roles were flip-flopped. A couple nights ago, AM was able to stop by the Whitney Museum in New York to attend the opening of the Yayoi Kusama solo exhibition. The traveling retrospective, which was recently shown at the Tate Modern in London (covered), features a diverse selection of her work from the 1940s through the present including traditional Japanese paintings, her canvases utilizing repeating motifs of dots and nets, furniture bristling with soft-sculpture phalluses, her polka-dot-painted pumpkins, whole room light installations, and more. Over this past weekend, San Francisco-based artist Andrew Schoultz visited the Hamptons at Eric Firestone Gallery to unveil a new body of work consisting of his remixed flags. Entitled Exo Uno Plura, the show explores the kinetic compositions referencing the political turmoil in the nation.
