POW! WOW! Long Beach ’16 / Streets: Recap

With the second edition of POW! WOW! Long Beach successfully completed, it’s now time to review the murals painted for the event. Openings: Pejac – “Law of the Weakest” (London Popup)

On Thursday, July 21st, Pejac revealed his long awaited London solo show for a private viewing. Installed as a popup at the Londonewcastle Project Space on Redchurch Street, Law of the Weakest included around 30 pieces created in the last couple of months exclusively for this event. The visitors entered the main part of the show through a dark room in which a large ball pit was placed. Coming up on September 8, OSGEMEOS will be opening their solo show at the 536 West 22nd Street location of Lehmann Maupin in New York. Entitled Silence of the Music, the show will continue the duo’s series of works featuring yellow and brown skinned characters juxtaposed against patterned backgrounds and urban environments. Currently at the New York outpost of Lehmann Maupin, Sunset in My Heart from Japanese artist Mr. will be display through August 12th. For this new body of work, the former protégé of Takashi Murakami has created a series of anime and otaku culture inspired pieces painted on distressed and sullied canvases, accented by graffiti. In his continuing effort to raise awareness about the refugee crisis, Ai Weiwei recently installed a new piece at Vienna’s Belvedere Palace as a part of his first solo exhibition in Austria, translocation – transformation. Titled F Lotus the piece consists of 201 rings with 5 life jackets on each, floating like lotus flowers and forming a big letter F. After installing 14,000 jackets on the columns Konzerthaus Berlin of in Berlin in February (covered), the Chinese artist once again wanted to bring attention to what is happening on the shores of EU. Streets: Nychos (Rhode Island)

This week in Providence, Nychos continued his hectic schedule with a snow leopard mural for the INFLUX public art festival put on by The Avenue Concept. The nonprofit organization working to bring sustainable public art to Rhode Island welcomed in the Austrian artist (with the help of INOPERAbLE) to paint his distinctive cartoonish dissected imagery for the project concentrated in two locations – downtown Providence and the “Cultural Corridor” between Classical and Central High Schools. Scott Campbell x Hennessy – VS Cognac Bottle

This week, we saw the release of Hennessy’s annual artist designed VS cognac bottle, tapping contemporary & tattoo artist Scott Campbell for the new look. Athens’ Dio Horia gallery recently hosted Taylor McKimens in their one month long residency program where he created a whole new series of paintings that are currently on view. Swapping Paint continues his recent Stoic Youth show (covered), which also explored his take on Hellenistic art. Utilizing the figurative part of his imagery as a repeating theme, the NY-based artist focused instead on the background, colorways, patterns, and the surrounding abstract elements. Only 10 days ahead of his big London debut, Pejac released another fresh intervention created recently on the streets of British capital. As a response to Brexit and it’s causes and consequences, the Spanish artist came up with yet another fresh concept to comment on the sensitive sociopolitical issue. Streets: Blu (Ljubljana)

Italian artist and activist Blu visited Slovenia last month in order to support the efforts of the local Rog Factory (Tovarna Rog) squat in their fight against the municipality of Ljubljana. During his stay, the street artist painted a strong piece depicting a gun created out of different tools, instruments and equipment used by the squatters, symbolizing their strength in their fight against the capital.
