Those who have been following David Choe’s Instagram no doubt already know about his Igloo Hong Project where artists Aryz, Esao Andrews, James Jean, and El Mac along with Choe spent some time in Cambodia creating public art. Damien Hirst x Connaught Hotel Christmas Tree

For this holiday season, the Connaught Hotel in London commissioned Damien Hirst to create a Christmas tree outside for passerby’s in the posh Mayfair neighborhood to enjoy. The 30 foot Norway Spruce was decorated by the British artist with the power of science and medicine in mind, one of the themes that frequently inspires him. Earlier this month, Chandran Gallery in San Francisco opened a show curated by Andrew Schoultz entitled Major Work. The locally-based artist carefully selected a roster of participants that included himself, Alicia McCarthy, Aaron Noble, Kelsey Brookes, Revok, James Marshall (Dalek), Sam Friedman, Eric Yahnker, Mark Dean Veca, Saber, Hilary Pecis, Tim Biskup, Eric White, and Allison Schulnik. Openings: Erik Parker – “Undertow” @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

A couple weeks ago, the 297 Tenth Avenue location of Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York hosted the opening reception for Undertow, Erik Parker’s new solo show. Drawing from a wide range of influences, the locally-based artist arranges these elements into complex compositions that become greater than the sum of its parts. The highly saturated palette as well as shaped canvases further accent his imagery, a commentary on the “world’s current political, social, and economic landscapes.” Discuss Erik Parker here.

After a successful sold out Los Angeles debut show with Thinkspace Gallery (covered), Sainer & Bezt aka Etam Cru rounded up their visit to the Southland with another signature, bigger than life mural. Last Saturday, Thinkspace Gallery opened the long awaited LA debut of the Polish street art duo, Etam Cru. Entitled Galimatias, the new body of work from Bezt & Sainer consists of canvas, linen, wood and paper pieces painted with acrylic, graphite, ink, and spraypaint. A full house and an abundance of red dots proved the anticipation of this show was well deserved. Last week, the Paul Kasmin Gallery (293 Tenth Avenue location) unveiled a new solo from Mark Ryden featuring his first-ever bronze sculpture, eight new paintings, drawings, color studies, and a new porcelain edition. As he mentioned in our recent interview, the theme of his exhibition could be described as “the soul confronting its physical form,” with the Dodecahedron symbolizing a bridge between the physical world and the intangible realm. Over the weekend, Corey Helford Gallery christened their new space in Downtown LA with a solo from Ron English (featured) that has been two years in the making. Entitled NeoNature, the new body of work features an imaginative menagerie of strange creatures and different evolutionary paths mixed in with some pop culture references.
