Streets: Revok x POSE on Bowery & Houston (Part I)

AM took some time to catch up with artists Revok and POSE (pictured above) as they were next to tackle that monster wall on the corner of Bowery & Houston. Following in the footsteps of many notable artists such as RETNA, Kenny Scharf, Barry McGee, Shepard Fairey, AIKO, Os Gemeos, JR, Keith Haring, CRASH and Faile, the two members of the MSK crew accepted this hefty project at the historic mural location, but took a little bit of a different approach. Over the course of six days, the […]

Streets: Rostarr for Absolut Open Canvas (New York)

Rostarr (featured) was recently invited to participate in the Open Canvas intiative put on by Absolut in Brooklyn. The New York-based artist, who only recently exhibited at the local branch of the Opera Gallery (covered), joined twenty other participants as they transformed North 6th street in Williamsburg through the project. The next phase will take place in San Francisco later this summer, but for now, check out more photos of Romon and his calligraphy in action. Photo credit: Richard Maitland. Discuss Rostarr here.

Streets: RIME (New York)

It’s been a while since we featured an in-depth look (see 2012) at one of RIME’s street pieces here on AM. It’s not for lack of material as the prolific artist otherwise known as Jersey Joe travels constantly putting up work around the world. This newest piece in New York featuring his signature mix of letters and gritty cartoonish characters was painted in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge. Also, check out an associated video and interview with RIME by the Village Voice where he covers […]

Streets: Brad Downey (Denmark)

After sharing some photos of Sam3’s pieces for the Public Art project in Horsens, Denmark, we now have some shots of another participant, Brad Downey. As opposed to the typical street artist, Downey’s work is more conceptual in nature and often takes advantage of existing urban elements that he exploits in which he sees natural irony or subtle metaphors. Take a look at the American artist working in the photos below, as well some of the completed interventions (three at the port and three in the center of town). Photo […]

A Look Inside Geoff McFetridge Studio

Geoff McFetridge, who recently showed during at Volta during Art Basel week and also completed a mural at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, looks like he has a nice space to work in. Printed Pages, the print publication of It’s Nice That, recently paid the Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist in his studio. Check out more photos of the space as well as some glimpses into his creative process below… Photo credit: Printed Pages (via Hypebeast). Discuss Geoff McFetridge here.

Streets: Shepard Fairey (Vienna)

Besides a new mural utilizing a novel approach from Faile, the streets of Vienna also saw the Cash, Cans, & Candy group show bring in Shepard Fairey. Along with a major piece created on the side of a building, his imagery could also be seen popping up all through the Austrian capital. Take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: famiglia_vienna. Discuss Shepard Fairey here.

Rewind: June 24 – June 30

It’s been over a month since our last Rewind feature, so it’s past due that we share some videos that caught our eye in the recent weeks. Headlining things is a documentary behind the making of BOOKHEAD, a music video from JJ Doom directed by Stephen Powers aka ESPO. Along with a colorful backstory as to their history together and how things progressed up until the making of this video, the footage also features the two creatives explaining their thoughts behind the process as well […]

Streets: Liu Bolin (New York)

It looks like Chinese artist Liu Bolin was back in New York again recently since the last time he was in the Big Apple when we hung out with him and JR as they worked on an interesting collaborative project together. While in town for his current exhibition at Eli Klein Fine Art, site of his show in 2012 (covered), the photographer and painter decided to stop by 5Pointz Aerosol Arts Center, in an area of Queens which has heavy graffiti presence. The walls there will soon be replaced […]

Streets: Faile (Vienna)

In association with Galerie Ernst Hilger’s Cash, Cans, & Candy street art group show in Vienna, various participants have also got up around town. Faile contributed an interesting large-scale mural utilizing a block-style process for the first time. Each piece of the 84 sections are handpainted with stencils, an aesthetic that is a nice parallel the format seen in the Brooklyn-based duo’s gallery work recently with the puzzle work. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Faile here.
