Streets: JR (New York)

Last week, JR spent part of his birthday doing what he loves best – getting up on the streets. For this unique little “inception” worthy project within a project, it looks like the French street photograffeur enlisted his friends Os Gemeos to pose for a photo on the back of a truck which then was pasted back onto said truck (seen below). On a related note, also check out the sweet gift he got from the twins here. Discuss JR here.

Streets: Shepard Fairey (New Mexico)

Shepard Fairey was recently invited to the Santa Fe University of Art and Design to do a lecture as part the school’s Artists for Positive Social Change series. Of course while there, Mr. Obey decided to create a mural for his fans in New Mexico. Considering the venue, Shep decided to get up with a pro-art, anti-war piece. See more detailed photos below… Photo Credit: StreetArtNews. Discuss Shepard Fairey here.

Streets: Blu (Rome)

We haven’t heard much from Italian street muralist Blu recently, but hopefully this new mural he just painted in Rome is a sign of things heating up for the prolific artist. The piece featuring interlocking cars was painted on the side of ALEXIS, an old building from the twenties which has been abandoned for years, but recently occupied by a group of intrepid students. It is named after Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was killed in 2008 by Greek police in Athens. Discuss Blu here.

Streets: Slinkachu (London)

Recently, street sculptor & photographer Slinkachu was asked to participate 20 Years of War Child, a new exhibition celebrating 20 years of the charity’s (War Child) work. He created three installations that he staged in various parts of London, the results of which will be put on display at The British Music Experience through March 28th. Take a look at the other pieces below along with shots from different perspectives below… Discuss Slinkachu here.

POW WOW ’13: DAL

Joining his wife and partner in art Faith47 in Hawaii for this year’s POW WOW was the South Africa-based DALeast. Only a few hundred feet away from where Faith painted her piece, DAL got up on the side of a building with this bird with an impressive wingspan, painted in his signature kinetic style. Check out more photos below and look for more from the duo as they head home. Discuss POW WOW here. Discuss DAL here.

POW WOW ’13: Nychos

After collaborating on an epic wall with Jeff Soto (covered) and painting a piece at the Lana Lane Studios headquarters for POW WOW Hawaii, Nychos took time to work on a mural of a more personal nature. The wall was painted by the Austrian street muralist in memory of his late grandfather show recently passed. As you can see, this piece is adjacent to the Rone x Wanderlust piece seen partially to the side in some photos… Discuss POW WOW here. Discuss Nychos here.

Art Focus: Jake & Dinos Chapman

Jake & Dinos Chapman, often referred to as the Chapman Brothers, are English artists known for their subversive humor and provocative work often dealing with themes of  violence and death. What caught our attention recently was a new epic miniature landscape composed of four encased diorama entitled The Sum of All Evil that they created for their current show Chicken at the PinchukArtCentre in Kiev. The brothers often utilize historical references and inspiration from some of their favorite artists like Hieronymus Bosch and Francisco de Goya in their work, with this piece being no different.  Take a […]

Overtime: Feb 18 – Feb 24

More stories from the week ending Feb 24: It turns out some of Charles Krafft’s work was not supposed to be ironic after all, and he shockingly appears to be a white nationalist who believes Holocaust is a deliberately exaggerated myth. France making one of its biggest efforts to trace Jewish owners of artworks stolen by the Nazis during WWII. POW WOW ’13: Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeff Hamada, Wu Yue, and Andrea Wan

Another mural we watched go up during POW WOW Hawaii was a joint effort from Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeff Hamada, Wu Yue, and Andrea Wan. Situated next to a small park in the Kaka’ako district, the piece meshed the talents of all four artists who hail from different parts of the world – Los Angeles, Vancouver, Paris, and Berlin. Take a look at some more detailed pics below… Discuss POW WOW here.

POW WOW ’13: Faith47

South African power couple Faith47 and DAL were one of the many duos that were in town for POW WOW this last week. We’ll start with the delicate work of Faith first with photos of her mural The Silence Before across from the Fresh Cafe on Queen Street in Oahu. The minimal palette that she uses blended in nicely with the neighboring structures and will be admired by art lovers in that part of town for years to come. Discuss POW WOW here.
