Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: JR x André

Continuing our survey of the streets in Miami, another interesting wall was collaboratively worked on by JR (featured) and André. The two French street artists combined their two styles – the signature photographic eye from JR and the stick figures of André – into a welcome addition to the Design District. JR was in town also for his book release with Jose Parla at The Standard and Mr. A was in town for his Love Graffiti project. Discuss Basel Week Miami here. Discuss JR here.

Those who passed by the Overtown area of Miami while in the city for Basel Week Miami will no doubt have seen RISK’s deconstructive color washes on many of the buildings in the area. Using the area as his personal canvas, the LA-based writer has enlisted many of his friends for collaborative murals including Shepard Fairey in the piece seen above. We’ll have more for you soon as other notables like Mear One, Smash, Anthony Lister, Gregory Siff, and more get up on backgrounds courtesy of Risky. […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Art Basel Highlights – Part 1

The first art fair AM rolled into at this year’s fairs in Miami was the main Art Basel event. During the early buyer’s preview, we caught many collectors rushing Black Friday style into to their favorite galleries for a chance to buy works from their favorite artists. This was not only the perfect time to beat the crowds see the standout works, but also for celebrity watching as they made their rounds looking for their blue chip artwork. Check out a look at the opening day action […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: Herakut

AM will be checking out the PULSE art fair later today (one of the many satellite events during Basel Week Miami). Those planning to attend at some point this week will also see this huge Herakut mural soaring above the horizon across from the entrance of the fair. The wall is a continuation of the German duo’s ambitious Giant Storybook Project that we recently featured. Make sure you check it out while you are in town… Discuss Herakut here.

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: Dabs Myla x Greg “Craola” Simkins x Witnes

While AM has been running around at all the various fairs, we have also been monitoring the street activity, which continues to be strong during this year’s Basel Week Miami. One of the murals that caught our eye was the collaboration between Dabs Myla, Greg “Craola” Simkins, and Witnes in the Wynwood Walls area sponsored by LRG. Check this worthy addition to the Miami landscape below – too bad there are cars in the way… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Streets: Escif (Spain)

Sparked by the recent pardoning of policemen convicted of beating an innocent man in Spain, Escif as painted a new mural in Valencia entitled Swan Lake. Taking inspiration from a recent video of the incident captured on tape (seen below) and set to the music of Swan Lake, the Spanish street artist has taken the liberty to add tutus to the officers in action. More detailed shots below… Discuss Escif here.

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Update: DALeast

With Basel Week Miami just around the corner, street and graffiti artists have been busying themselves the last several weeks on murals and walls throughout the area. One of those in town is the South Africa-based DAL who hasn’t hesitated to get up several of his kinetic creations including the piece above entitled Rug-A and the one below Osteoplasty.C. For those in New York, he will also be opening a show POWDER of LIGHT at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery next to Joe Sorren’s new work. Discuss Basel Week […]

Preview: Joe Sorren – “Everything’s Alright Sweetie, Please Get Some Sleep” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

For nearly two decades, the name Joe Sorren has been synonymous with an ability to create a story of endless interpretation within his works. If you have been following the surrealism painters of the modern age, then you certainly know the name and the work. But who is Joe Sorren? The man behind the art has remained somewhat of an enigma. He is seclusive perhaps borderline reclusive, especially in regards to his sanctuary of creation. Sorren firmly believes his art should speak without having to speak […]

Streets: Askew One (New Zealand)

Dubbed the Askew Tankfarm Project, this newest endeavor from New Zealand’s best is located in Auckland near the wharf in the Wynyard Quarter. By painting over a cluster of silos, a nod to the area’s industrial past, Askew has creating a stunning new public art attraction. The lettering recounting the entire poem Auckland by C.K. Stead is a nice touch. Check out more of the photos below…
