Streets: World Roundup (Jan 9 – Jan 15)

Well, hope everyone survived Friday the 13th. If so, you are will be able to enjoy this week’s roundup of work on the streets. Leading the charge is a series of new murals in an abandoned tower by Sheffield-based artist Phlegm. You can see the rest of them here. Other worthy walls include Slinkachu (London), Escif (Spain), Hyuro (Spain), DAL (South Africa), Monsieur Qui (Paris), REVOK x REYES x STEEL, and BAST. All the photos after the jump…

Art Focus: Carly Waito

Admirers of gems and photo-realistic painting technique will enjoy our Art Focus this week on Carly Waito. The Toronto-based artist and graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design chooses specimens of semi-precious gems and minerals, photographs them in macroscopic detail, and then renders them in oil paints with meticulous care. Her most recent showing was at the Narwhal Projects booth at the Aqua Fair during Art Basel Miami Week. More sample images after the jump…

Streets: Escif & Blu (Buenos Aires)

While his compadre, Italian street artist Blu was painting up Buenos Aires (here, here, and here), it looks like Escif tagged along (you may also remember their back to back efforts together in Spain here) to work on some walls of his own. His contribution to the Argentinian city-scape is an entertaining step-by-step rendition of how to open a locked door with a credit-card. *Correction* this is a collaboration piece with Blu. More photos after the jump from Buenos Aires Street Art.

Streets: Buff Monster @ The Standard (Los Angeles)

Last time we saw Buff Monster (featured) out on the streets of Los Angeles, he was atop a busy Hollywood Boulvard pasting up his trademark design and commemorating his 10th year anniversary (covered). Now, he’s begun 2012 with a new mural on the doorsteps of the The Standard Hotel in Los Angeles. Known as an open invitation for artists such as Eric Haze and Dave Kinsey, this wall is now glowing bright with Buff’s usual shades of pink. This piece, which took him two days to […]

Streets: Blu (Argentina) Part III

Masterful street muralist Blu made the most of his time in Argentina apparently. Despite already completing two large murals (here & here) in Buenos Aires, here is news of yet a third large politically charged piece. For this wall, the anonymous Italian painter renders an imposing corporate looking city put together with large buildings that looks to have sprung a leak, spilling out a torrent of money that wreaks havoc on the surrounding small towns and environment. More photos via Buenos Aires Street Art and the […]

Streets: Jeff Soto (Paris)

While in France for a couple shows he was involved with, Jeff Soto (interviewed) also found time to work on a couple public murals (here & here). In addition to those street pieces, the Riverside native also decided on doing something more adventurous. Venturing into an emergency air duct above the tracks on the Paris Metro, he drew with chalk on the textured and grimy walls some imagery from a dream he had the night before. More photos he sent us after the jump…

Overtime: Jan 2 – Jan 8

Urinating woman arrested for leaning against, punching, and sliding her ass down $30 million Clyfford Still painting. Jerry Saltz’s top ten for the year in art, 2011. Kathy Grayson gets asked questions, then answers them. Robert Lucky Jr. fined & sentenced 25 months for selling forged Clementine Hunter paintings. The Financial Times has lunch with Peter Brant, who says he identifies with the 99%. Check out Roman Abramovich’s star-studded £5million new year’s eve party in St. Bart’s. A collection of etchings by Lucian Freud to go up […]

We have another diverse mix of artists from all around the world for this week’s street roundup. Other walls that caught our eyes include Stik (UK), C215 (France), Cranio (Brazil), Zeh Palito (South Korea), Voina (Atlanta), Cere (Spain), Liqen (Oaxaca), Pixel Pancho (Spain), and Sat One. Photos after the jump…

Art Focus: Virginia Wagner

This weekend, we present Virginia Wagner’s luminous paintings for your consideration as our Art Focus. The Brooklyn-based artist is inspired by her childhood experiences with her entomologist father and mythology with her palette influenced by the landscapes of Iceland and the Northern lights. Coming up, work will be featured in the first installment of Paula Gately Tillman’s Canterbury Salon Series – Sleeping Beauties. More of her work after the jump…

Videos / Basel Week Miami ’11: Risk – “Beautifully Destroyed”

While he is currently working on a yet to be completed mural in Los Angeles (covered), Risk did recently complete a wall in Miami (as you can see in the photos here). Entitled Beautifully Destroyed, the piece that was created during Art Basel Week features the MSK/AWR affiliated writer’s signature geometric forms as well as his color washes & drips. Koshin Finley has all the footage on video above, but you can check it ou in person if you are in the area (Grand Central @ 697 N […]
