Studio Visits: Mars-1

Earlier this week, AM had the pleasure of visiting the San Francisco studio of artist Mars-1 as he was putting the finishing touches on his latest pieces, debuting this weekend (teased).  The new body of work features a few of Mario’s newer (stylistically speaking) black and white pieces, as well as a massive canvas showcasing his signature transcendental style. While hanging out in his Lower Haight studio we also got the chance to check out his excellent collection of vintage and contemporary vinyl toys and […]

Recommended openings for this coming weekend (April 1st – April 4th)

As spring kicks into gear this month, the shows are pouring forth like April showers. So many good shows, hard to single out just one, but some of those that are foremost on our radar include the big grand re-opening of the new and improved La Luz De Jesus Gallery out in the Silver Lake/Los Feliz area of Los Angeles where the recently shuttered BSFA in Culver City is getting folded back into the legendary La Luz space. So now there will be two nice […]

Sketchbook: Travis Louie

As we continue our series of sketchbook features, we move on to one of our favorite artists, Travis Louie (interviewed). Not only does Travis carry around a sketchbook full of his kick-ass sketches, he also has a journal where he writes the famous stories that go along with each of his paintings. Unbeknownst to most fans, the stories are written first and the paintings are based on ones he likes. Take a look some pics we took of his sketchbook after the jump.  You may […]

Streets: TrustoCorp – San Francisco to New York City

TrustoCorp (covered) went bi-coastal this month, hitting up the greater San Francisco area with some of his classic street signs; and then following that up with a fresh batch of new designs for his hometown, New York City. The counter-cultural and artistic parallels between the East Bay’s Berkeley and New York’s East Village are plentiful, making both locations ripe for the bombing.  As always, if you’re a resident of any city that TrustoCorp has hit up, please feel free to upload any pictures you may […]

Overtime: March 21-27

A sweet new painting from Joe Sorren for the Corey Helford “New World” show – check out detail in that wall. MLFYIASOH visits Josie Morway’s studio. Does any artist eat better than Stella Im Hultberg? Our friend Erratic Phenomena interviews Thomas Doyle. If Sylvestor Stallone can sell art at Art Basel, why not KISS Frontman Paul Stanley. Aurel Schmidt speaks. Ever wonder what it would be like to be the Pope’s Raphael? Frank Gehry checks out his newest creation in Las Vegas. Speaking of which, […]

Studio Visits: Melissa Haslam

Aussie artist Melissa Haslam has been hard at work on some new paintings, some of which will be revealed in San Francisco at the “Showcase: SF” exhibition with LeBasse Projects early next month (more on that later). This body of work will have more of a portraiture feel to them with what looks to be an amazing increase in detail in her work. Melissa has put in a lot of time in this new set of paintings, even creating studies first, and it has all […]

Streets: Roa

Since his show in Paris, Roa has been busy putting new work, mostly in Belgium. With each new piece, he further affirms his mastery of the art of proper placement. Not only that, he creatively incorporates elements of the location into his work and elevates typical two-dimensional street art with three-dimensional twists. Take a look at more of his recent work after the jump to get an idea of what we mean…

Streets: Various & Gould

Looks like the German street tagteam of Various & Gould have been out and about pasting up art on the streets around the Brooklynite Gallery where they opened a show last week (previewed). Their eclectic and colorful representations of what look to be circus performers definitely brightened up the neighborhood. More images after the jump…

Streets: Pixadores attack mural by Os Gemeos, NUNCA, NINA, Finok, and Zefix

Proving that tensions between graffiti artists and street artists are not just a phenomena of the western world (see banksy vs. robbo), Pixacao artists in Sao Paulo have defaced a mural by Os Gemeos, NUNCA, NINA, Finok, and Zefix. They are probably angry that the mayor of Sao Paulo, after creating the project “Clean City” in 2006 (which erased much of the illegal graffiti) is using public funds for commissioning legal writers and famous street artists. This all at a time when the government is […]

Preview / Interviews: Edwin Ushiro – “At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home” @ Sloan Fine Art

As we mentioned in our teaser a couple weeks ago, Edwin Ushiro will be opening his show “At Night, Lights Fell and Loved Ones Returned Home” this Wednesday at Sloan Fine Art. AM was looking forward to this show after his impressive showing at Lebasse Projects last September and were lucky enough to be able to catch up with Edwin for an interview recently where he discusses his thoughts behind the show, some of his process, and LOST among other things. Take a look at […]
