Showing: Mark Dean Veca – “Year of the Snake” @ SiTE:LAB (ArtPrize)

The Los Angeles-based Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) recently traveled to Michigan to create an installation for this year’s ArtPrize competition. The site-specific immersive installation entitled Year of the Snake transforms the Grand Hall of the old Public Museum of Grand Rapids with his signature imagery. The concept behind the work featuring a printed vinyl floor and hand-painted walls is a riff on this year’s Chinese Zodiac and that fact that the space is actually going through a transformation, like the shedding of a snake’s skin. For those interested, head over here […]

Openings: Andrew Schoultz – “New Work” @ Morgan Lehman

A couple weeks ago, the Morgan Lehman Gallery in New York welcomed Andrew Schoultz back for his third solo show there simply entitled New Work. Touching on geo-politcal issues through the metaphor of imagery derived from currency, ships, maelstroms, trojan horses, symbols of the illuminati and other common motifs seen in the Mission School artist’s repertoire, the new paintings were set off nicely with a background of bricks and overlapping water features on the walls. Take a look at more photos from the packed opening night below… Discuss Andrew […]

Showing: Dabs Myla – “San Francisco is for Lovers” @ White Walls

Australian artist duo Dabs Myla, opened their latest solo show on the 17th of August at White Walls Gallery in SF (previewed). With the concept being more of “an intimate installation” than just a show, the artists turned part of a gallery into an immersive experience. Strict about the color palette they were using – all shades of pink are red dominated the space, with sexy imagery painted on every surface – making the entire space has a feel of a Japanese love hotel room. With paintings displayed on top […]

As you can see from the photo above, this impressive piece is already in place […]

Francesco Igory Deiana Installation at RVCA (SF)

Francesco Igory Deiana (featured) recently finished an installation in the window of RVCA on Haight St in SF. Using wood and spray paint, he built a structure using his recognizable geo elements painted with bright neon red and orange color with dark cloudy stains over them. With a such distinctive setup, the San Francisco-based artist definitely managed to get the store window more noticeable on this famous, already very bright and colorful street. Due to the size of the installation and the time limitations, Deiana couldn’t work […]
