Openings: Glenn Barr – “Faces & Small Epics” @ MondoPop

After showing at La Luz de Jesus in June, Glenn Barr has opened his next show, this time in Italy. Held at MondoPop in Rome, Faces & Small Epics is billed as the Detroit-based painter’s first European solo. From the looks of things, Barr brought with him some new paintings, drawings, and prints for this exhibition and you certainly want to stop by if you are in the area to check it out before it closes on December 3rd. Openings: Interesni Kazki – “Objects of the Universe” @ Avantgarden

Last week in Milan, the collaborative street muralists from Ukraine, Interesni Kazki, brought their special blend of imagery to AvantGarden. Combining their surreal visions with a sense of whimsy and wonder, the duo impressed the crowd with their plentiful paintings, which translated quite well into the gallery setting especially when executed in large-scale. Also, they gave their fans a taste of what they are famous for (see Russia, Ibiza, Portugal, and Slovakia) with several wall pieces inside and out including a playful “window” at the […]

Openings: Steve Powers / Barry McGee / Todd James – “Contemporaries” @ Galleria Patricia Armocida (Milan)

A couple weeks ago, Patricia Armocida Gallery opened a group show curated by Steve Powers (aka ESPO) at their Milan location. For Contemporaries, the venerable Philadelphia-based street artist hand selected ten artists from both the East and West Coasts of the United States, balancing the artistic dialogue between the old school and the new school generations. Of course, taking center stage were Barry McGee (aka TWIST), Todd James (aka REAS), and ESPO himself, the trio being longtime friends and collaborators perhaps best known for their […]

Preview / Installation: Interesni Kazki – “Objects of the Universe” @ Avantgarden

Coming up on Thursday night, September 29th, in Milan, street sensations Interesni Kazki will be opening their solo show at AvantGarden. The Ukrainian duo’s work is colorful and surreal with almost a Dali-esque feel to it.  Appropriately, their exhibition is entitled Objects of the Universe as their paintings are typically filled with disparate mundane items arranged in inventive compositions. Also, interesting will be how their work (see Russia, Ibiza, Portugal, and Slovakia) translates indoors although they will be working on some wall murals as well. […]

Studio Visits / Previews: Eric White – “Automatic” @ Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea

On Thursday, September 15th, Eric White (interviewed) travels to Italy to exhibit his latest body of work Automatic at Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea. We had the pleasure of visiting his studio several times through the course of this year to observe the talented and meticulous painter getting ready for this overseas show. The constant themes in this series are automobiles and classic movies and by applying his unique vision and technique, Eric is able to bring us his version of the magic of Hollywood and […]

Showing: Barry McGee @ Workshop Arte Contemporanea (Venice)

Slipping quietly under the radar in the wake of his impressive exhibition in London back in July, Barry McGee unveiled another new body of work just a short distance away from the UK this past weekend. Perhaps making up for lost time abroad, Workshop Arte Contemporanea this time plays host in Venice, Italy, where a wide range of Barry’s signature “clusters” are on display. Constructed of acrylic-painted panels and incorporating geometric patterns, typography, portraiture, the odd household cleaner (ie. Clorox), as well as some composed […]

Fame Fest ‘ 11: NeSpoon

As the opening (Sept. 24th) of the Fame Festival draws nearer, the last few artists will be touching down to put their mark on the walls of Grottaglie. The most recent visitor was Polish artist NeSpoon and she stayed for 3 weeks, taking advantage of the unique history of the town and learning some new techniques from a local ceramics master. She spent her time in the streets using a variety of methods to get her message across including stencils, ceramic installs, and lace. The […]

FAME Festival ’11: Vhils

Plaster, concrete, paper, wood – where other people see construction materials and tools, the visionary Vhils sees art. After working on a wall outside of the Post No Bills gallery in the States in conjunction with the European Bailout Show (covered), the Lisbon-based street artist traveled to Italy to do his part for the annual Fame Fest. Take a look at some of the other pieces he produced while in town as well as a video of some of the shenanigans that went down.

Streets: Blu & Ericailcane (Italy)

Do these two Italian street magicians never stop? After making a pit stop at the FAME Festival and the R.I.P.Arte Festival, Blu and Ericailcane are at it again – this time with a collaboration piece.  This looks like they are taking aim at a popular target – politician, bankers, and corporate types.  The octopus looks to be by Ericailcane and the rest by Blu. See the full mural as well as some in-progress shots after the jump…
