Releases: James Jean – “Adrift” Print

Starting November 17th at 8:00 AM PST, James Jean (interviewed) will be offering a new print entitled Adrift on his webstore for 24 hours only. The image is taken from the massive piece he painted for the Masterworks show in Long Beach (covered), which he also used the cover of his new book Pareidolia. As a part of GEISAI∞infinity project curated by Takashi Murakami and Takumi “Kasenyan” Kaseno of the GEISAI Executive Committee, Kaikai Kiki’s Zingaro galleries in Nakano Broadway, Tokyo will be showing Zugzwang, a solo show by Taiwanese-born artist James Jean. Openings: “OUTSIDEIN” @ ArtCenter College of Design

Last week, OUTSIDEIN opened at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena with contributions from artists Olivia Bevilacqua, David Flores, Chase, Robbie Conal, Cryptik, Jeanne Detallante, Shepard Fairey, James Jean, Geoff McFetridge, Kenny Scharf, RISK and Jeff Soto. The exhibition was dedicated to the art of graffiti-based mural painting and hence featured murals painted inside as well as outside by the participants. Previews: “OUTSIDEIN” @ ArtCenter College of Design

Thursday night, the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena will be opening OUTSIDEIN, an indoor and outdoor exhibition that is focused graffiti-based mural painting. Along with the wall painted by RISK that we showed you a few weeks back, artists Olivia Bevilacqua, David Flores, Chase, Robbie Conal, Cryptik, Jeanne Detallante, Shepard Fairey, James Jean, Geoff McFetridge, Kenny Scharf, and Jeff Soto have also made contributions. Coming up on November 7th, James Jean (interviewed) will be opening a solo show in Tokyo at the Hidari Zingaro Gallery. Curated by Takashi Murakami, the exhibition will be entitled Zugzwang, a German chess term that describes when you need to move, but you don’t want to because of the terrible conditions and that fact that it might make things worse. James Jean x Momofuku Commission

After painting a mural last month for POW! WOW! Long Beach (covered), James Jean (interviewed) has started work on a new project. Utilizing large panels, the gifted painter looks to be prepping a large installation for friend and chef David Chang’s Momofuku restaurant group. The name can be loosely translated to “lucky peach” which explains why Jean used the peach as his focus for the commissioned works. Releases: James Jean – “Pescados” Print

On August 8th, James Jean (interviewed) will be offering up another time-limited print on his webstore entitled Pescados. Each one (image size: 8 ⅜″ tall × 6 ¼″ wide, paper size: 11 ⅜″ tall × 7 ¼″ wide) is signed and numbered and will cost $100. The edition size will be determined by the number of orders in a 48 hour window from 12:01 AM PDT on Saturday, August 8th until 11:59 PM on Sunday, August the 9th. Discuss James Jean here.

POW! WOW! Long Beach ’15: James Jean

Over the weekend, James Jean (interviewed) completed one of his tallest murals yet for POW! WOW! Long Beach (see our coverage here). Painted on the side of the historic Varden Hotel in the heart of downtown, the striking black and white mural was placed next to a wall by Tristan Eaton (more on this later). James Jean: Xenograph Preorder & Fundraiser

James Jean (interviewed) recently announced the preorder for his next book entitled Xenograph. Documenting his work from 2010 to 2014, the monograph will pick up where REBUS left off and also features images of his exquisite pen and ink drawings from his  sketchbook. Funds raised for the first printing will go toward the cost of self-publishing for the first time, giving Jean more control over the process.
