Last night’s opening for “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed here and here) reaffirmed why New Image Art is one of the primary driving forces in the alternative/low-brow/street art scene. The show was everything we thought it would be and more – great art, an energetic crowd, and non-stop entertainment. Tonight marks the opening of New Image Art’s anniversary show “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed). AM swung by the gallery yesterday to check out the progress of the installation. While we were there, Judith Supine was putting on the finishing touches to his 18’x16′ kinetic sculpture and Neck Face was customizing a motorcycle in his uniquely raw style. The first great group show of 2009 went down last weekend at White Walls SF. Some 15 years ago, Marsea Goldberg launched New Image Art, and in doing so, helped foster the alternative/low-brow/street art scene we all know and love today. Jim Houser and Richard Colman’s “Awful Mountain” (previewed) opened last night at White Walls in SF. As usual, Houser’s installations complemented his paintings perfectly. If only collectors could have him go to their houses and setup the pieces they own in a similar fashion. There is something attractive about the clean aesthetics of Jim Houser’s paintings that seem to resonate with the viewer. As you take in his whole body of work for each show, you start to realize that there seems to be a system behind his paintings where you almost feel like there is some sort of coded message he is trying to get across.
