Streets: JR / Nuit Blanche (Toronto)

Earlier this month, this year’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche opened up to the public in Toronto. One of the participating artists this year is French photogapher JR (interviewed) with several projects to engage his fans in Canada. One of these is seen above, the continuation of the TED winner’s Inside Out project where people are asked to have their photos taken in large scale black & white format at a mobile photo booth and then pasted as public art or for some political motive in certain instances. In this case, the […]

Showing: JR Installation @ Panthéon (Paris)

It looks like the Inside / Out message from JR (interviewed) isn’t stopping anytime soon. We had just finished enjoying the street intervention in Shanghai ourselves (also see Time Square, Japan, Los Angeles & London, just to name of few) and now the French artist is back in his hometown for a massive installation at the Panthéon. Blending contemporary art, in this case JR’s photographs of people all from all over the world, with classical architecture always creates an intriguing combination (i.e.: KAWS at the PAFA & Murakami at Versailles). […]

Streets: JR – “Inside Out: Shanghai” @ Xin Tian Di

JR’s (interviewed) has been very busy the past few weeks setting up a museum exhibition, gallery show and bringing his signature Inside / Out truck to China. AM attended this latest installment of the artist’s Inside Out global journey (the project has already traveled to Time Square, Japan, Los Angeles & London, just to name a few). Now, JR has wheeled his interactive photo booth truck into Shanghai’s Xin […]

Streets: JR @ National Library of France (Paris)

French “photograffeur” JR (interviewed) recently turned the facade of the National Library of France in Paris into his largest photo printer yet as he brought his Inside Out project back home again. Pasted in strips over the course of a week in November, the striking image and clever use of the building further cements himself as one of his country’s foremost street artists. Take a look at more images below… Photo credit: truxi. Discuss JR here.

Videos: JR – Inside Out Project

This spring, when JR announced that his Ted Prize wish was to “Use Art to Turn the World Inside Out” he really wasn’t joking. Using people to participate is the key and the goal is to make this the world’s largest participatory art project and since this initiative began, portraits have reached citizens on almost every continent. For review, the concept is simple. Go to the Inside Out website (here), upload your portrait so JR can send you a printout for you to wheatpaste to […]

JR – “Photo Booth” @ Centre Pompidou (Paris)

Furthering along his INSIDEOUT initiative, a global art project that encourages people to utilize the artist’s signature methodology – printed black and white poster pasted outdoors – to portray their local heroes as dramatically represented in NYC recently, JR has created an interactive installation within the historic George Pompidou Museum in Paris that is now open to the public. Anchored by a printing facility plastered with series of new murals from the famed “photograffeur”, Photo Booth brings all the tools necessary for the average person […]
