KAWS certainly has had a busy schedule in the last couple of weeks with multiple openings that drew huge crowds. Openings: KAWS @ Mary Boone Gallery (Chelsea)

Continuing his spate of strong showings recently, KAWS opened one of two shows over the weekend in New York at the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea. For this space, the Brooklyn-based artist created three new wooden sculptures, over eighteen feet high, in a style first seen in Switzerland for a showing for Basel week. These three monumental wooden companions were displayed along with three eight foot tondos. Prolific NYC-based artist KAWS has been very active lately showing his paintings & sculptures at art fairs & museums. After the FIAC art fair in France, two museum shows in the US at the PAFA (covered) and Nerman Museum (covered), and only few days before opening a solo show at Galerie Perrotin in NYC, the artist announced the release of a silkscreen prints portfolio on his Instagram. Over the weekend, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City opened up a new show from KAWS entitled UPS AND DOWNS. The NY-based artist has been on a roll recently (also see PAFA, BAM, MTV, Basel, Tokyo) and it looks like he still has a couple more high profile shows scheduled before the end of the year. This past weekend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) opened its doors to unveil the much anticipated exhibition by KAWS. The show featured 70 works (old & new) at the historic institution and included both paintings and sculptures that spans some major milestones of the artist’s storied career to date. There are only few days left before Brooklyn-based artist, KAWS opens his solo show at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia on October 11th. As previously mentioned the artist is working on the institution’s inaugural plinth sculpture, but also, these days he is busy installing his paintings in the galleries of the Historic Landmark Building. We recently attended the public unveiling of the new Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) mural created by KAWS we first previewed at night. The new mural location also contains a bike rack specially designed by David Byrne. This sculpture/rack entitled “Bold Wink” is a perfect eye catcher to grab some eyeballs as BAM patrons can see this new project opposite the institution’s Peter Jay Sharp building.
