Before heading to New York for his big solo at the new Galerie Perrotin location in November, KAWS will be taking a side trip to Philadelphia for a show opening on October 11th at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). Besides working on the institution’s inaugural plinth sculpture, the Brooklyln-based artist will also install additional work in the galleries of the Historic Landmark Building. If you remember, his 16-foot Companion figure was put on display at the Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station by the […]

Streets: KAWS @ BAM (Brooklyn)

The artist that took MTV’s Video Music Awards by storm (covered) is back in the streets of Brooklyn! Well, sorta. Before launching himself into the world of fine art and working with prestigious galleries such as Galerie Perrotin (here & here) and Honor Fraser (here & here), KAWS got started in the 90’s leaving his mark on NYC’s urban landscape with his signature graffiti tags and ad interventions. Now, he makes a prominent return outdoors with a fresh new mural coming up in Downtown Brooklyn, across […]

Preview: KAWS for MTV VMA’s

With this year’s Video Music Awards from MTV only several days away, installation has already started for the event. As mentioned when news first broke of KAWS’ involvement with the design of the special 30th installment of the award show, held in Brooklyn for the first time, there was going to be a a 60-foot Moonman (this year’s prize also remixed with the Brooklyn-based artist’s design) on stage, his tallest Companion ever. As you can see from the photo above, this impressive piece is already in place […]

Upcoming: KAWS @ Galerie Perrotin (New York)

For those of you who like to plan your art calendar a little in advance, a trip to New York (if you aren’t in the area) may need to be arranged if you are a KAWS fan. Although he has had some pretty high profile projects (MTV & Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade) and shows around the world (Switzerland, Japan, Paris, Hong Kong) in the interim, stateside admirers of his work haven’t seen a proper exhibition since early last year in Atlanta. So there is much to celebrate […]

MTV VMA Moonman Reinvented By KAWS

It was a giant step for mankind when Buzz Aldrin first stepped on the moon and now, another big step has occurred in the career of KAWS as he was tapped to re-design this year’s MTV VMA “Moonman” trophy. His iconic work is continuing to hit the mainstream, especially after his inflatable companion was revealed in last year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. Now the 2013 winners of the VMA’s, set to be held for the first time at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, will receive a prize from the locally […]

Openings: KAWS – “GISWIL” @ More Gallery

A couple weeks ago, we gave you a taste of what to expect for the KAWS solo at More Gallery opening during Basel Week Switzerland. Now, we have gathered some more detailed photos of the two massive wood companion sculptures as well as some of the tondos that were exhibited at the same time. We know it’s a trek to get out to the show even if you are in Basel at the moment, so if you can’t make it out before the August 26th close, just take a […]

Openings: Art Basel (Switzerland)

There are numerous high quality art fairs occurring year round but the granddaddy of them all is Art Basel in Switzerland which opened its doors this week. Drawing some of the most prestigious galleries to exhibit a seemingly endless list of notable artists such as Kaws, Rob Pruitt, Will Cotton, Shepard Fairey, Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara and Jeff Elrod (just to name a very few), it’s no wonder that the wealthiest collectors and the hard-core art enthusiasts flock to Switzerland each year for a chance […]

The exhibition runs through August 26th so don’t miss this if you are in the area. Photos via the artist. Discuss KAW here.

Openings: Art Basel (Hong Kong)

Yesterday saw the opening of Asia’s preeminent art fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, housed in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC). With a strong tilt towards galleries based in the region, the fair boasted over 170 booths with a plethora of worthy art for collectors and fans to enjoy. Here are some of the highlights for us including a huge piece from Mr. (seen above), different versions of the new Murakami sculpts, a section dedicated to Yayoi Kusama sculptures, and much more. The […]
