Recently at the MOCA in Los Angeles, a large-scale vinyl reproduction of Jonas Wood’s imagery was put up on the museum’s 5,400 square-foot facade. Rearranging segments of his watercolor painting Still Life With Two Owls from 2014, the mural introduces passerby’s to common elements of the locally-based artist’s modern takes on still lifes – plants, ceramics, collage-like compositions. Currently at Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles, Patrick Martinez has a new versatile body of work on display entitled All Season Portfolio. The new pieces presented range from his signature hip hop influenced (now with socially conscious slogans) neon signage to his newer series satirizing Pee Chee Portfolios of our youth, oftentimes replacing the athletes with victims and imagery of police brutality, Take a look at more photos from the exhibition below and visit for yourself before it closes on February 18th. All Season Portfolio, a new solo show from Patrick Martinez, is set to open on January 14th at Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles. The body of work he has prepared includes his signature hip hop inspired neon signage, his newer series of work satirizing Pee Chee Portfolios of our youth by replacing the athletes with victims and imagery of police brutality, and new mixed media stucco paintings. On February 25th, Alex Gross (interviewed) will be opening a new show at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Antisocial Network, the new body of work from the locally-based artist continues to explore the idea of modern technology and his view of the ironic effect of social networks in eroding the personal relationships around us instead of bringing us closer. Gross’ surreal imagery for those exhibition also features some reoccurring references such as corporate branding and his anthropomorphizing of different creatures. Discuss Alex Gross here.

On Saturday night (January 7th), thousands of hours of hard work by Robert Xavier Burden will culminate in a solo showing at Gregorio Escalante Gallery in Los Angeles. Original Myth will highlight the San Francisco-based artist’s large scale paintings of pop culture icons in elaborate compositions along with some smaller works. Star Wars characters, Thundercats, Batman, Transformers, and other recognizable nostalgic characters fill Burden’s oil paintings, leaving viewers in awe of the beautiful rendering and detail. On January 14th, Dave Kinsey (featured) will be opening a solo show at New Image Art in Los Angeles entitled Momentary Bliss. The new work is heavily influenced by his time in the Sierra Nevada Mountains before relocating back to a downtown Los Angeles studio. Last month, Thinkspace Gallery hosted an exhibition from Fuco Ueda entitled Odd-Eye, her second solo (see 2014) with the Culver City showspace. The beautifully rendered new works from the Japanese artist are mainly created on canvas with a few smaller pieces on paper, all featuring her characteristic lush imagery and palette. Surrounded by reoccurring motifs and symbols of death (such as chrysanthemum flowers & skeletal elements) as well as disquieting creatures, her flushed girls seem to be trapped in some sort of lurid dream world. Tonight in Los Angeles, Nucleus Gallery will be hosting a new exhibition from Junko Mizuno entitled Takarabune. The solo from the Japanese artist continues her exploration of the pop culture and the spiritual aspects of her country with an emphasis on the Seven Lucky Gods, as referenced by the title of her show. A collection of hand-made head dresses and accessories inspired by Mizuno’s paintings by artist Alston Stephanus will also be on display during the opening. Discus Junko Mizuno here.

A couple of weekends ago, Thinkspace hosted Stella Im Hultberg’s (interviewed) new show in their project room concurrently with Audrey Kawasaki’s solo in the main space.
