Upcoming: PUSH – “Out Of Line” @ Known Gallery

This Saturday, February 8th, PUSH will be opening a new solo show at the Known Gallery entitled Out Of Line. Returning to the site of his recent special installation last year at the Los Angeles showspace, the graffiti and fine artist will be sure to create imagery featuring his street informed geometric forms and lines. Openings: D*Face @ Stephen Webster (Beverly Hills)

Tonight, February 5th (5-8pm), Stephen Webster in Beverly Hills will be hosting a new show from  D*Face (interviewed) along with the US release of his new monograph – One Man and His Dog. Along with this signing session, a new collaboration print between the UK-based artist and his friend Shepard Fairey, who wrote an essay for the book, will be released entitled FACE to *FACE (Edition of 200, 18″ x 24″, $80). Previews: D*Face Show & Book Release @ Stephen Webster (Beverly Hills)

The UK-based D*Face (interviewed) will be traveling to Stephen Webster’s Beverly Hills for the US launch of his book One Man and His Dog on Wednesday, February 5th (5-8pm). Along with the standard edition of the monograph, a special box set (limited to 50, $250) will be available which includes a six color screen print. Previews: Bruce Yan – “Brand New” @ G1988 (East)

Tomorrow night (February 1st) at Gallery 1988 (East), designer and illustrator Bruce Yan will be presenting new works featuring his pieces exploring pop culture. Often using clever juxtaposition of silhouettes and iconic imagery that we all are familiar with including films from Hayao Miyazaki, the Seattle-based artist is able to get us to look at things in a new light.   Take a look at more preview images below… Discuss this show here.

Upcoming: Tim Biskup – “Kobe Prelude Experience” @ Nike Vault

Last month, we covered the start of The Kobe Prelude Experience put on by the Nike Vault at the STAPLES Center. Since those first pieces were revealed by Allison Torneros & Kris Kuksi, other artists have created work inspired by key moments in Kobe Bryant’s career. Tomorrow night (January 31st, 6 pm) is Tim Biskup (seen above) turn as he will be on hand (along with and and Alberto Mielgo) to discuss what they each came up with. Discuss Tim Biskup here.

Upcoming: Victor Castillo – “Pure Pleasure” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

This Saturday, February 1st, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles will be opening a new show from Victor Castillo. In a departure from his usual vivid and colorful paintings, the new body of work will consist of 12 black-and-white paintings on paper as well as a large-scale mural installation. Despite elements of his imagery still in place like the sausage nose characters, the dark social commentary appears to have toned down a bit. Discuss Victor Castillo here.

LA Art Show ’14: Ace Gallery

One of the first booths you saw on entrance to this year’s Los Angeles Art Fair was occupied by the ACE Gallery. The large booth was stocked with prime examples of work from many of the artists that show with them including Justin Bower (seen above), Laurie Lipton, Phil Frost, Date Farmers and more. Check out the rest of our coverage of the fair here.  

Openings: Oscar Murillo – “Distribution Room” @ The Mistake Room

Last weekend, along with taking in the LA Art Show (covered), we also stopped to check out the much talked about Los Angeles and US debut of Oscar Murillo. Touted as the next Basquiat by some in the art world, the Colombian born artist put his process on display with videos, finished and unfinished works at The Mistake Room with a show entitled Distribution Room. During the opening, raffle tickets ($1000) were also sold to pick winners of two t-shirts painted on by Murillo. Discuss Oscar Murillo here.

Upcoming: Baby Tattoo x Dr. Sketchy’s LA Drawing Marathon

Coming up tomorrow, from Saturday (January 25th) 6 pm until 8 pm on Sunday (January 26th), there will be a 26 hour drawing marathon put on by Dr. Sketchy’s Los Angeles (presented by Baby Tattoo). The live model sessions will feature special appearances by Prince Poppycock, Ulorin Vex, Skin Diamond and Mosh plus artists Michael Hussar and Brandi Milne. On Saturday, January 25th, the newly located 101/Exhibit will be opening a Cat Art Show in Los Angeles with a portion of the proceeds will benefit Stray Cat Alliance. The roster features an interesting mix of  artists including Antony Micallef, Clayton Brothers, FAILE, Gary Baseman, Jonathan Yeo, Justin Bower, Kevin E.
